    Anterless Rifle Season

Late season ended up here in NE Iowa because we had some bad weather years where no one could get out to hunt. The sale of doe tags was well absorbed by the other seasons though!

AZ Javelina and Deer Hunt: LONG Story

    Congrats one great hunt!

    Tough question

Anybody catch the interview Bill Winke did with Branstad? Its on Winke's site today. I get the feeling his allegiance lies with 1.FB 2. Insurance companies 3.Opening things up for NRs in the name of economic activity. Can't get more Republican than that. I'm a life-long R, farmer, and FB...

    EVA indoor shoot

Great shoot Travis! I got Bonker a size small shirt since his new year's resolution was to go on a diet and I just know he has the willpower:rolleyes: And maybe he can spare us the sight of him in UA. Imagine a sausage stuffer on "Pack XXXX-tight setting". Hell, there wasn't anyone in that...

    A must read

Wow, if the gov did just hunt with Winke, and it was said he hunted with the Drurys last week, he's really getting a good look at the state of the deer herd!! or maybe he just wanted a good look at the state of the deer "industry" in Iowa. Oh well, he has to get paid back for all those...

    A must read

Well written. Kinda dripping with irony isn't it? Bill made a good living on the "big buck" industry. More power to him, I enjoy his show sometimes too. Mostly because of the horn fever he and others in the business created, bucks don't make it to maturity anymore and he can't find the giants...

    Crp

Continuous sign-ups include riparian buffers along streams, wetlands, filter strips(grass contour strips instead of terraces) and some highly erodible land. These can be enrolled anytime and usually pay more per acre than the general sign-ups.

    Legal?? Ethical??

Falls in the same category as glassing from the road. Not illegal to glass property you can't hunt, but if it's your property it makes you nervous.

Dirty Politics Deer Management Article F&S

Very good analysis of the situation in Iowa. Hope Litchfield doesn't get fed up with the whole thing and quit. He's a straight shooter and we need him.

    Iowa Grand Slam?

All great stuff guys! The last thing on that list should be an hour spent planting a few oak seedlings. That's a perfect day!

    Changing the way we think!

I've been asking politicians for a increase in resident any-sex fees for years. They react like you want to shoot their dog. Falls in the same category as raising taxes I suppose. Noone wants their name on that bill.

    Brassicas

I have been watching my brassicas plots from a distance to see if any bucks show up that I want to hunt. No luck in that dept., but man are the deer pounding the turnips/radishes. Had 23 deer in a 1/2 acre plot the other night with acres and acres of corn and bean stubble across the fence...

    Meat is meat, right??

Just read where Wal-Mart in China is offering refunds to customers who bought donkey meat at their stores. It was tainted with what they think is fox meat. Slaughterhouses over there must be interesting places!!

Not a good start to the new year!

Hope your recovery goes well. Any idea what failed on your stand?

    Weather:

Check temperature records for Jan. 1982. We had several days of -30 with 30-40 mph winds. Tree limbs broke and shattered like glass in that wind. With lots of livestock back then, it was brutal. Hogs and cattle wouldn't even come out of the barns to eat.

    Weather:

Feb. 3rd 1996 it was -47 just down the road from me at Elkader. I remember it well. Tried to feed the cattle that morning, electric motors wouldn't start even with drive belts off. We had some extreme cold stretches back in the early 80's also. December 1983 was brutal, lots of records set.Dry...

    Deer Numbers

The turnout of hunters at these ICN meetings has been dismal at best. They really are a great opportunity for people to speak their mind and be heard. It should be no surprise that the Gov. doesn't listen well to hunters when he can see from these meetings how few people really care. As has...

    Deer Numbers

Thanks for chiming in here Randy. Everyone that has posted an idea here is on the right track. But like Randy said, "WE NEED NUMBERS!" As the legislative session approaches, everyone should send all the letters and emails they can. Randy informed me that the sales tax increase that I wanted...

    Deer Numbers

And by the way, that sustainable funding goes to way more than the DNR. Habitat will be a big winner thru REAP funding and water quality projects, which just so happen to have ground cover of various sorts included!
