    Beekeeping

We have always gone through Dadant. My grandfather always went through Dadant, as well. Good people there, good supplies, and good bees.

    Beekeeping

We had problems with skunk and opossum eating our bees. A leg trap in front of the entrance will slow them down. We ended up building a small pine shack big enough to house two hives about 5 ft apart and some tools. Helps keep the hives warmer in the winter, and predators have a harder time...

Making deer tags good for any season, or how to get more than one buck tag HF218

If one buys an anydeer for Early Muzzle, they have their choice of Bow or Late. Can’t buy an antlerless for either of Reg Gun if one hunts Early Muzzle. They changed that two or three years ago. Gun and Late Muzzy, yes. Just seems odd, but perhaps there’s some sort of logic behind it.

Making deer tags good for any season, or how to get more than one buck tag HF218

Does anyone know the actual number of tags sold vs tags filled last year? I’m not in favor of this “one tag good for all seasons, until filled.” I would, however, like to be able to purchase an antlerless for ONE of the gun seasons OR late muzzle, if I hunt early muzzle. Perhaps I’m wrong - if...

What's going on here? Need input...

Let me start off by saying I am not familiar with the Knight’s breech plug design. However, I’m thinking just hot soapy water and a Q-tip over the last 2-3 years has likely left quite a lot of buildup. On the other hand, that looks like way more sparks and fire than primer blowback (excluding...

    Cleaning a breech plug

The CVA QRBPs use ~ 7/64” for the fire channel and ~ #71/0.7mm (0.027in/0.69mm) wire gauge for the flash hole. Measurements taken from CVA’s QRBP cleaning kit.

    Knife vs frozen deer neck

Looks like that blade is Aus-8, which isn’t a super hard steel, and, from what I’ve seen, is supposed to be fairly rugged. That’s some pretty substantial chipping - I’d contact Cold Steel to see what they have to say.

Steel Shooting Targets - Support our local HS

The AR500 targets I have (Amazon) barely pit (maybe 1/32”) with a 270 Win at 100 yds. I’ve got a few round targets from 4-12”, but could use a Silhouette or two. Been wanting to replace the plate of mystery metal I have at the fence line with a big AR500. Thanks!!!

    Slug Distance

According to JMB Ballistic’s calculator, if a 12 ga Hornady SST were to be fired at an initial angle of 30°, one could expect the bullet to travel 2,600 yds, give or take a little. People do some crazy things, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a carelessly fired bullet flew over your head from 800...

    Slug Distance

Are you looking for the theoretical maximum distance a given bullet can travel, fired at the optimal angle? Back in the early 90’s, a forensic scientist was of the belief Billy Dixon’s Adobe Walls shot was impossible, since, he believed, a .50-90 was incapable of traveling that far. He, another...

    How to clear misfire??

You aren’t kidding! I’ve never, personally, experienced a hangfire with an inline, but recall two hangfires with other firearms. For misfires, I usually hold onto the gun for about a minute before setting the gun down, still pointed in a safe direction, waiting a few more minutes. Then run...

    How to clear misfire??

CVA sells a breech plug cleaning kit with two properly sized bits to clean the QRBP fire channel and flash hole. I like to clean the plug fire channel and flash hole after each shooting session. Primer fouling really packs in hard and can constrict the flash channel to the point of severe...

    .44mag ammo suggestions

Might try some classic Winchester White Box 44 Mag 240 JSP, if you haven’t already. May actually have a bit less recoil, still with plenty of power for whitetails, as well.

    .44mag ammo suggestions

What bullet are you shooting? Your Marlin has a 1/38 twist, so you might try a lighter bullet. Some rifles have 1/20 twist (same as 44 mag handguns) to stabilize heavier bullets. I’ve heard that the Marlin doesn’t like much more than 240 grain.

    Slug

For a few years, I was using a stock Mossberg 500 20ga 26” field barrel, imp cyl, with Win Super-X 3/4 oz rifled slugs. Good shooter.

    SD Card question

I run Sandisk SD cards in my trail cams, and other equipment that take SD cards. Sandisk, Sony, Samsung, and Lexar (discontinued) are the top, most reliable brands. Any of those brands will serve you well. The most important thing: make sure what you are buying is genuine! There are a lot of...

    Need new cams

Been running Browning for about 8 years. Only problem I’ve ever had was the door latch cracked on one cam. Other than that, no problems. Just got a couple new ones this year and love the Browning Strike Force Pro XD. Excellent cam all around. Fantastic battery life. Picked them up at B&H while...
