    Neck Injury

Possibly. Could just as likely be from fighting too. I had a nice 3 year old 8pt that had his neck ripped open in mid-November from his jaw down his neck and I'm sure it was another buck. He was down the totem pole by 4-5 spots. He has since healed up and is actually still holding antlers as of...

    Land prices / insane!!!

Agreed, and it's coming for KS next Back to Iowa, I just don't see a huge correction coming unless something unforeseen happens. We were looking forward to an upcoming auction and found out today that the auction was cancelled because multiple people came in with cash offers above what the...

    DNR Public Meetings

EHD. Western Iowa, especially the southern Loess Hills has been hit hard every year for the last 3 years. I had a buddy who found three big deadheads while shed hunting a small piece. I walked a farm last week and found 6 dead bucks. They just can't catch a break around here.

    MINERAL TO PUT OUT NOW…

GOOD point. I should've just said I'd heard it was an option, and would like to hear if others had heard or done the same.

    Snow Geese

Are you talking about jumping birds or taking shots past 40+ over decoys? I'm all for a good jump, especially on a feed. But I mean...sky busting is sky busting whether it's ducks in November or snows in March. I would say that is "not doing it right" too.

    MINERAL TO PUT OUT NOW…

Agreed. I will start adding garlic in early summer to potentially stave off EHD midges... Question for smaller property owners/hunters like myself. (1) If this new law passes and you must hunt 200+ yards from a mineral site, is there a way to feed mineral without it leaching into the soil...

    MINERAL TO PUT OUT NOW…

Pros- they'll probably lick it from time to time if you want to get pictures Cons- it does absolutely nothing from a nutritional standpoint

Coyote dogs and Private Land Deer Hunting.

I have no problem with respectful coon/coyote hunters using dogs. Outside of deer season I'd encourage it. The disrespectful, entitled ones will ruin it for the rest and that sounds like what a few are dealing with. My issue is neighbors letting dogs run loose. These are the dogs that chase...

    MINERAL TO PUT OUT NOW…

I just bought that exact block as an experiment because of this thread. I put it out two weeks ago and just went back to check it yesterday. I didn't put a camera over it but there has certainly been deer nibbling away at the edges. I'd love to hear thoughts from others on the nutritional value...

    Pheasant rebound…

Very similar to quail- unless chicks are raised in the wild, by a wild hen that can teach them survival instincts then they are doomed from above by raptors and at eye level by fox, bobcats, coyotes, etc. Habitat is #1, predator control is #2. Weather (especially spring nesting season) can also...

    Snow Geese

Birds are moving QUICK with this weather across western IA/Missouri River valley. I had to drive to central NE for work last weekend and the Platte valley is stacking up too.

    Hickory woodlot

Very cool picture example. Did you do any sort of planting or just let nature take it's course?

    Elk in Iowa

Mind if I ask which county? I'm fairly certain I had the same bull on our farm in November.. PM me if you'd prefer.

    HF 2104 and SSB 3129

I don't buy the "new farmer/rancher" angle. It doesn't make sense if you really understand how the DNR, INHF, etc come to acquire land. It's a straw man argument ("how could you be against small farmers and ranchers you heartless bastard"??)

    Pheasant rebound…

I was out on a farm last week a couple days after the temps got above 15 or so and the roads were fine and saw a bunch of pheasants. Granted, this farm had great native marshy cover for them but they were definitely doing fine there.

My guess- Farm Bureau. Shoutout to Pheasants Forever!

    HF 2104 and SSB 3129

Anyone heard about these bills? Sounds like it's a retooling of the anti-public land acquisition bills that always pop up. The way I read them, they're even worse than the wording on last sessions bill. I just got an email from BHA this morning and the subcommittee on SSB 3129 already happened...

2 PIGS in ONE PIC- Rub post - Chase is on!!!!!

One time a group of pigs was discovered in SW Nebraska near some family of mine. The game and parks went in like a SWAT or SEAL team; planes, helicopters, dogs, the whole 9 yards. Pretty impressive and exactly how I'd hope IDNR would handle a situation like that too. Wild hogs getting...

    Land prices / insane!!!

@Thinkin Rut agreed. Just like stocks- it's all a guessing game until something happens and then some can say "told you so", whether it's a boom or a crash.

    Land prices / insane!!!

I just don't see a correction coming in Iowa. Still a lot of cash, a lot of demand, and little inventory on the market, 2020 purchase prices are holding even on marginal properties.
