Post Signs and Lock Entrances
On my new property I bought, I heard the same thing so I made signs that said:
New Ownership
No Tresspassing
(bla bla bla about 24 hr surveilance and procecution)
I put them along the roads and haven't had a problem with bowhunters so far.
All my entrances...
SW Deer Sightings
Plant dbltree's recommendations.
I did his rye, awp, clover mix and have been seeing 25+ deer a sit (in Fremont County-very SW county in Iowa)
Not much "green" now in Iowa and is why rye (i also added wheat and oats) and clover mix is attracting deer like crazy.
Time...
Dbltree Mix
Here is Rye, Wheat, Oats, AWP and Red Clover Mix that I got in the last week in August.
Luckily had close to half inch of rain couple days after I got it in.
Used a drill that a farmer gave me and it worked good. Had it on the highest setting and only got about 88 lbs. of...
Canola and PT Turnips
Here is some pics of Canola and PT Turnips. Canola is closest to the camera and PT Turnips are in the back. You can see the color difference.
They look good here but haven't had much rain and look a little weak right now. I probably planted them a little too thick...
Dbltree,
Been following all your recommendations for brassica's and grains. I will post pics of brassica's this next week. They look awesome. Thanks Very Much!
I finished my rye, wheat, oats and AWP's mix and clover this past Monday. I have some extra rye seed. What if I broadcasted...
Info
Thanks for the "detailed" information. It's stuff like this that get's me excited about food plots. Better than just buying a bag of highly advertised stuff and not knowing what benefits it could do to the soil.
THANKS AGAIN PAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tiller Depth
Dbltree,
When you till how deep do you go?
I bought a Woods tiller and it has:
PTO slip clutch protects drive system from damage if a root or rock is hit
I just cleared some locust trees (smaller) in a brome field and I've disced it with an offset disc (like a plow) and...
PT Turnips and Canola
What is earliest you guys recommend getting turnips and canola in? (SW Iowa)
Am going into an broken up brome field. Would you recommend fertilizer?
If so what kind and how much?
Thanks Very Much!!!!!!!
Other ideas:
An extra release in case other breaks
I am farmer at heart and hunt out of some homeade groundblinds and carry a plyers and thin wire (comes in handy more than ya think) for windows, etc.
Cell Phone
Fertilize or Not?
Am just tilling up some old brome stands. Am putting in the wheat, oats, rye, AWP, red clover mix on 80% of the area (Sept. 1ish) and canola with PT turnips on other 20% of area (Aug. 1ish).
Do you recommend fertilizing? PH was fine.
It is a plenty large area (4...
If the buck enters the foodplot upwind he will have to travel thru the foodplot or circle it to see if there are any does. This could cause him some extra time on our parcel verses our neighboring parcels and lessen his chances of getting shot on the neighboring parcels. I think the idea is to...
Was reading on the QDMA forum about Tony Lapratt and Ed Spin.... on how they recommend createing mazes in their food plots and properties so that the bucks have to spend more time on your property visually checking each food plot pocket verses checking one large food plot and moving on. I see...
Innoculent and Mixing Instructions
Dbltree,
Bought all of my oats, rye, AWP, red clover and a little wheat.
1. Should I innoculate any of these (I see in the past you have innoculated the AWP)
2. How is the best way to mix this stuff. I have a 3 point broadcaster just like the red one...
Because of this alfalfa link I put in 11 acres of alfalfa this spring (thank god for the rain and good weather).....................GREAT INFORMATION..............thanks dbltree for your expertise on all this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was looking at Albert Lea Seed Catalog and with the rye, AWP, and instead of the red clover, why not plant alsike clover.
It says for red clover to plant 10 to 12 lbs per acre and the seed cost $2.70 per pound
It says for alsike clover to plant 5 to 8 lbs per acre and the seed cost $1.40...
