Talked to Monte today with Iowa Habitats on fall food plots (great company if you guys ever need someone to do food plots, native plantings or TSI---www.iowahabitats.com)
He recommended broadcasting the oats, wheat, AWP, Red Clover and 1/3 of the rye around Sept 1st. Ten days to two weeks...
Couple of my friends in Wisconsin, Iowa and Kansas have had very good luck with Canola (a form of rape) as a fall food plot.
Was curious if anyone has ever tried it. I'm going to broadcast strips of it this year in mine. Along with rye, oats, wheat, AWP, and red clover. (and possibly Cow...
Mick,
I might try this on a small plot. It used to be a brome field. Couple questions:
1. What is ideal time to plant the soybeans (SW Iowa) for this strategy
2. Would you blend soybeans with anything else (cowpeas, wheat, rye, etc.?)
3. What and how much fertilzer?
4. When will...
I am having the farmer leave 5 acres of corn standing and was wondering about broadcasting turnips now before the corn gets too tall (thought it would be the easiest way to do it before it gets too tall).
Would this work?
I am not wanting the plot to attract during bowseason (have green...
I have a pasture in Kansas that I just bought next to another property I own and the pasture has been well taken care of for getting rid of cedars.
It is a brome pasture with a lots of cedars in the ditches but not in most of the areas in the pasture.
I was thinking of going in and...
Another question that maybe could be answered at the same time:
I have a brome field that I am converting to Rye-Oats-AWP-Red Clover.
Would you fertilize it?
What is the ideal date to plant these? (i'm in SW Iowa)
Thanks Very Much!
Is Red Clover the cheapest and best clover to mix with the fall plot for spring benefits (deer food, putting nitrogen back in the ground, etc)?
Any other clovers you would recommend?
Thanks Again!
In Kansas where I hunt they plant wheat for about 5 years in a row and then rotate to milo.
What would a guy have to do to plant rye/oats/AWP every year?
Could you plant soybeans in the spring and then disc under and plant the rye/oats/AWP?
How many years could you do that in a row...
I hunt in Monona/Harrison county and the bus driver spotted 2 in my driveway going up to my farm a couple weeks ago. And many other have been spotted in the area.
I think they are here but I hear their core area is 50 miles so they can be seen in many different places?
I hunt in KS and in Iowa. In KS I've had the farmer leave a couple acres of milo standing and the deer love it. It's easy to eat and they feel safe (cause it about as tall as them) feeding early.
Where I hunt in IA (Loess Hills-20 miles NE of Missouri Valley) all the farmers plant...
I was at a friends farm this weekend and was amazed! He built thousands of dollars of fencing (8ft high woven wire) in big timber to funnel the deer to certain "kill" locations.
Instead of using high dollar woven wire, do you guys/gals think 4 ft. tall silt fence (it's a black fence you see...
I am building some gravity feeders that I want to put corn in to supplement the deer this time of year and take inventory (trail cams) of what I still have for bucks.
I grew up on a farm and we use to feed corn mixed with 30% salt to limit the intake of corn in cattle.
Would this work for...
I've got 2 Older Cuddebacks, 2 Newer Cuddebacks and 4 new Moultrie's (the new ones that are Cabela's exclusive and need 6 D batteries).
The older Cuddebacks are very good, better battery life and only good thing about new Cuddebacks are the ease of getting the memory disks out.
The 6 Volt...
Re: Reducing your scent before and while hunting!!
Step 1: Keep it simple, don't complicate things and don't make hunting suck a complicated fu--ing game. HUNT THE WIND to and from your stand!
I've got 3 big bucks on one of my properties. In the past I have started hunting mid October on. These 3 bucks got me all worked up (one will go over 200")and am wondering what strategy you would use. I want to be out there first thing but don't want to educate them too much.
I was...
When I placed stands I never thought much about getting out of them. Usually I was covered in deer and educated them. Now I set up by a ditch or even use more permanent ground blinds so I can sneek out the back in a ditch or something like that so I don't educate the deer.
GETTING TO YOUR...
