Do you just leave the rye or terminate at some point? I threw some rye into some grazing alfalfa that didn’t do much for a year. With the rye and more fertilizer it REALLY took off…interesting…
Bucks seem to cover an awful lot of ground in the breeding season. Apart from screening your personal property, my thought would be to encourage as many neighbors as possible to help patrol.
Thank you for sharing your experiences on this topic. I’m absolutely convinced poaching is a FAR worse...
Speaking of packing, when the ground is dry my ATV pull behind cultipacker does compress fully into the soil, it rides on the ribs. Do the CAT 1 & 3 pt hitch style fully compress to the flats easily? If so, I’m interested.
Just finished up doing a lot of girdling & cutting smaller trees (1-3” dia.) for one of my 2025 projects. Thought I’d mention this saw since I use it a lot also & it’s quite a bit more affordable than my Stihl professionals…
Echo CS-271t, 27cc @ 6.6 pounds, runs great with a sharp 12” blade.
Interesting observation regarding the declining insect population. I remember as a child not going barefoot in the yard for fear of getting stung by honey bees and catching grass hoppers by the hundreds in a single day. I’m hoping to get a pollinator plot established this year to try to do my part.
Stihl 201 T-CM for smaller stuff & Stihl 261 C-M for medium stuff…
They are both awesome saws!!!
I’ll edit to add if you’re looking for a lightweight saw, the 201 is a much better choice. I love the top handle. It’s very lightweight, it cuts like an animal and you’d swear it’s a bigger saw .
Last year, after investing hundreds of hours of labor and thousands of dollars of my own money in our family farm, I elected to shoot ZERO deer. Limiting the harvest has been my #1 objective for 3 years. I can tell you that I am very unpopular for making that decision and there are enough people...
I can relate to that article. Deer numbers way down, a bow hunter in every tree in November, rifles in shotgun, EHD, the good ole days seem to be in the rear view mirror…& sadly it doesn’t seem that long ago seeing multiple gross B&Cs in a single year was VERY common..,
My (late) father hated deer with a BURNING passion & did everything possible to eliminate them and keep them off the farm. We were pretty opposite to be honest. I would give up managing the farm to have a single day with him again. Don’t sweat the small things, someday all you will have is memories…
