Thanks guys. Is the theory behind planting beans that they allow one to spray multiple times to combat grass and the seed bank or is there some synergism at play?
I like the E3 bean idea and we wil no-till them for sure. Hopefully they stay off them enough to get them going. The other 40...
The plots are small so beans are something I didn't consider. Over browsing will be an issue so they probably won't have a chance to canopy. I should also clarify these plots are going in spots that have been pastured for cattle. Hopefully the manure they have been laying down for the last...
Congrats and that is a sweet looking property. In my experience hedge and cedars equal the best bedding cover but the cedars can get too thick. I'd probably hunt it at least one year to get a feel for how deer use it before getting serious about plot locations etc. Enjoy! Nothing better...
We're going to be putting new plots in hay/cattle pasture ground with a no till drill. Would you just spray a couple weeks before drilling right into the killed sod or spray, work the first couple inches of ground to break up the sod roots, then drill? There seems to be conflicting reports...
Without question late October through the first 5-6 days of November have been the best the last 5 years in extreme North MO (I'm a Driver 9 iron from Iowa). People point to warm weather this year, which of course sucks, but last year was in the 70's the first 5-6 days in November and mature...
Without question the movement has been better late October to about 11/6 than 11/6-11/10 the last 5 years in extreme north Missouri.
Hunting a new farm this year so can’t compare to previous years but movement last weekend far better than this one. Age structure is lacking but jumped 2...
Good luck! The good news for you Iowa landowners is you can take 3 bucks per year allowing you to hang a tag or two on "cull" bucks and still have one for a giant.
Great conversation. You may want to check out the book Strategic Harvest System: How to Break Through the Buck Management Glass Ceiling by the guys from Mississippi State University, one of whom, Dr. Bronson Strickland, was on Don Higgins podcast last week. In short, approximately 1/3 of bucks...
I should have explained the make up of these areas a little better. These areas aren't conducive to burning without torching the other cover. One thicket is about 30 acres with only about 3 acres of open grazed areas spread through it the other is 20 acres with perhaps 4-5 acres open. The...
We are trying to decide how to approach some overgrown pasture areas that will no longer have cattle come late October. Prime bedding is the goal. There is plenty of cedars, brush, shingle oaks, MFR, etc. right now but also open areas within that have been grazed short and look like fairways...
