There were deer moving everywhere tonight...saw a couple bigger ones on the prowl with no mate...that's usually a good thing!!!

    Movement Update...

I was just wondering what people were seeing with this cold snap. I've seen more bucks in the fields the last two days than I have in a long while...just haven't had a chance to see them from a tree...maybe tonight!!!

    Movement Update...

I had "taxi duty" this morning and told my wife this morning should be rocking and she gave me the typical "oh they will be there waiting" speech. Anyway, I say that and 50 yds from the house a 3 1/2 yr old is walking the edge of the field towards the house. I can't imagine what it was like...

    He's Busted!

Give the Drury boys a phone camera and see what they can do in the heat of the actions!!! Congrats and rats all at the same time...he had to be a fighting fool and there has to be something with some mass around to break that type of bone!!!!

    Ditch hunters...hmmm

I think it's that time of the month for the deer hunters...that time being either you have your deer and this has been another great season...or the rut is screwy, the weather is screwy, the moon is screwy, or some guy is in a ditch...all saying the same thing...I don't have my deer and I'm...

    Rut

I was helping my son set some traps this afternoon and saw where at least some of the bucks are...they are with a single hot doe pushed out in the middle of no man's land. I saw bucks where a person wouldn't even dream of hunting (brushy draws in the middle of corn fields). One hot doe before...

    Movement Update...

I went out this morning and saw 7 different bucks (I had seen them all yesterday morning, so nothing new), and then saw a deer on the way home from church out in the middle of a bean field. He looked like a bird dog working a pheasant with his head down.

    Southern Iowa Rifle Season

I had a guy tell me last year he had shot his biggest buck of the season and it was just two knobs...shot it on the run. I don't even live in a county where they have it, and I wish they would knock it off!!!

    Movement Update...

I saw 9 does and 9 bucks all before 7:30, and then it just went dead. The bucks were of all different ages. I had one 160s buck that had made the commit until two smaller bucks pushed a doe out of the bedding area...the chase was on in all directions, but so much for committment...love was in...

    Are hunters changing????

Bowmaker makes a great point. The truth is everything has changed. The hunter has changed, but then again so has the landowner. I moved to Iowa in 1989 and could have bought as much land in Decatur county (ie Albia) that I wanted for in that $200 range (and it was even advertised over and...

Worst night ever had deer hunting

So what were you wearing on your head?!?! Truth...I heard a story of someone that happened to and they fell out of their treestand!

    Movement Update...

I should have been in a tree this morning, but ran traps with my teenage son...and glad I did. What I did find interesting was we cover a lot of reallllly good deer country and did not see a single deer in the fields. The moon is absolutely huge right now, and you could see a half mile across...

    Movement Update...

The weather in SE Iowa has been brutal the past couple of days...I'm running some traps with my son and have seen no deer on the fields in the AM...I'm thinking when this weather breaks it's going to be a rodeo!!!...going to give it a whirl the first weather break.

    west/northwest

I may be crazy, but I also think there is a lot less movement with anything from the east. It usually means some crazy front is getting ready to wrap around and everything just lays low for a bit!!!

    Movement Update...

Hunted this morning (Monday)...saw lots of does running around nervous and goofy for the first hour of light, then had two small bucks come through around 8:30, then nothing for the next three hours. I think these warm days with lots of moon at night is making the evening hunts start really...

    Movement Update...

At 8 this am (would have been 9 yesterday) had a 140s buck running a doe across the field by the house, then on the way to church an hour later saw another back of the same class running a doe across another field...looks like some are getting lucky, and hopefully some of us will get lucky with...

    Movement Update...

Today (a total of 8 hrs. in two stands) was as uneventful as last night was exciting. The wind blew like crazy here today, but then tonight it got really calm right at dark. From our house you can see a good stretch of river bottom and almost an hour after sunset I could still clearly see deer...

    Seeing does vs bucks

I think it also depends on how much quality deer management a person does (meaning the buck to doe ratio). We used to do no qdm 10-15 yrs ago and would see does all through the rut (there were a ton of does and not many bucks). After the ratio of bucks to does got closer together we started...
