If you buried an arrow that far he must have been quartering one way or the other. If he was quartering away it's likely one lung and they can do a terribly long way and live on that hit. If it was quartering to you, it pierced the diaphragm and he will be dead because of lost chest...
If rather see you get him as opposed to someone without the history. I lost a deer we believed to be 9.5 to a car a few years back. Not the way he deserved to go.
Even if he's 4 I'd give him another year. He has potential. If he were short tined I'd say kill him because they usually don't go from short to long once they are mature.
Cold snap got the youngsters fired up as usually. Scrape cameras are blowing up with activity but it's still all at night by mature bucks. Once they start daylight walking then it's go time.
I'd really like to see this study performed with two parameters:
3.5 or older bucks
Midwestern states
Habits change from year to year and it would be interesting how mature deer navigate the wood lots as opposed to dense forests of PA.
I say you have one of the best 3.5 year olds I've ever seen. He doesn't have a Roman nose and just looks young. He will gross boone. Passing him all depends on the situation. Several guys on here would definitely pass him and other will think your nuts for even considering it. My thought is...
This deer gives me issues to age. He's extremely long. Classic 3.5 year old taper, but I've also seen several deer around 7.5-8.5 that look like 3.5. I'm not surprised if he falls in the older class. Score wise is 134-138. Do you have previous pictures of him?
Definitely nerves played a major role combined with either too many pounds or the shoulder muscles not being in shooting shape.
I've had it happen in my first deer and in cold weather. I attribute the cold weather to also being out of shooting shape at that point in the season.
It definitely needs to be all beans. I planted two 1 acre plots about 200 yards apart and the deer absolutely destroyed them. I had to go in and plant brassicas.
I'd also recommend using eagle seed forage soybeans instead of ag beans. They withstand browse much better and grow about 6-8 feet...
IMO it's foolish to shoot an expandable with a low poundage bow. You shouldn't be taking shots past 30 yards anyway so concerns about accuracy are a null point at such a short distance. Typically low poundage hunters are inexperienced as well leading to poor shots. At least a fixed blade...
