    Great book on deer management!

Ghost, The central Iowa chapter of QDMA is going to have a booth at the classic and will be selling books. Hopefully they will sell tons of books. Those who read it will find that it will really open their eyes concerning what they should and shouldn't be doing if they want to see lots of...

    Great book on deer management!

The books are in! Cost is $20. It is worth twice that. I'll personally guarantee satisfaction or your money back (if you get them through me, otherwise you need to talk to Grant ). Old Buck

    Calling your legislative rep

Well done supertech! It is easy to gripe but get little accomplished. What you have demonstrated is how easy it is to effectively take action and really get something accomplished. Thanks for the report and for getting involved! Old buck

Question about pines for a wind break

I think the answer will vary from one situation to another depending upon a number of factors including local deer density and the availability of alternate food sources. I see lots of people who have a variety of conifers including white pine with little or no damage. On the other hand I've...

One hunters view point - please read

DOR, You bring up an interesting point. The DNR must by land at the appraised value. If we increase NR licenses it will drive up land values. Dollars for land acquisition will not go as far. Less public land will be bought. More unintended consequences.

avidhunter, I've been through this on the dove issue. A well thought out statement signed by a number of people would have some impact. On the other hand it is easy to get lots of signatures on a petition and legislators know this. The greatest impact is from lots of individual putting...

I think everyone so far has brought up great ideas. Now let's get this wisdom to those to make the laws! Contact your legislators. They have a lot of issues in front of them each session and can't be experts on everything. Make your arguements polite, logical, concise and compelling. IF...

    Thoughts About Setting Hunting Goals

I think DOR gave you great advice. I agree with everything he said. The most important thing is to be out there having fun! I can be watching fawns and non-shooter bucks and having a good time. Then a doe comes into sight and my pulse takes off, adrenaline flushes through my system, I reach...

    Sureshot1's Late Season Monster Doe

"I'm pretty proud, even though it's only a doe!" Ditto Rack and NWBuck, I've hunted areas where the does had been heavily hunted by bow. It was easier to get a shot at a big buck than a year and a half old doe. A friend of mine had to let a 180" buck walk because he hadn't been able to shoot...

Thoughts on QDM (Quality Deer Management) in Iowa?????????????

150 class, I just re-read through your post. Since my initial reading I've come across another information source that I think will answer a lot of your questions, especially those related to population dynamics, genetics and the effects of rut stress. It is the book I discuss in another...

    Pine or Cedar?

Old fence like JNRBRONC says, works well. I've done exactly like he says, drive along and watch for roles of it where fence has been pulled out.

    2005 Iowa Legislature

Onecam, Great post. It is easy to gripe but this is where you can make a difference. Do exactly as onecam says. Make a polite, intelligent, well thought out, expression of your opinion. Make sense and your voice will count. Old Buck

    Kat...Your experiment

Kat, You might try this experiment. Take one part of your carbon suit and run it through the dryer. Take the other part and just air it out. Put each part in a location where you know deer will walk down wind. Hide them from the deer but make sure you know where each is. Get back and watch...

More qdm, more does & more good eats!

Limb Chicken is right on like usual. I got all the tags you could get before then I started working on the 1000 additioinal antlerless tag allotment for my county. By the way, that allotment for the county you hunt in should give you a clue concerning the need to shoot does in your general...

More qdm, more does & more good eats!

Shovelbuck, Actually, to tell you the truth, I've lost count. Let me say that we have way too many does in this particular area but I am doing everything I can to bring the herd in balance with the habitat and to move the sex ratio closer to one to one. Old Buck

More qdm, more does & more good eats!

Ghost, Ooops! Sorry I missed one of your questions. Yes, my goal is a one to one sex ratio. Studies on old American Indian sites have revealed that the pre-settlement sex ratio was very close to one to one. So this not only makes for good management and a balanced herd but a truly more...
