    Firearm seson

I am planning to hunt a firearm season this year, on private that should not have anyone else hunting it. Which firearm season would you get a non-landowner either sex tag for? My thoughts are kind of leaning towards late muzzy. Let everyone around hunt the shotgun seasons and give...

    If This Doesn't Frustrate You

It seems that there are more and more bigger deer in urban areas, not just Iowa either. I am seriously considering hunting more urban areas if I am just wanting to go after a "trophy" deer. Would help some of these areas out also by taking my fair share of does.

    Tree Protectors Remove Or Not?

iowathumper I will try to find some. I have never posted pics on here either, so I will have to figure all that out. Basically just take 5 or 6 ft fencing cut it so it makes what ever diameter you want it. Drive 2-4 stakes or fence posts and attach the fencing. I like to put the post on the...

This is why we can't have nice things...

Did you call the TIP line? If there is ever any case against anyone, it has to start with the smallest of evidence. Tire tracks to match a vehicle, can lead to more questions being asked.

    Climbing Sticks

Look at X-stands. They have some nice sticks, personally I am going to get rid of most my others and go to these. I really like that you can get your whole foot into the step and that it is serrated for grip.

    Clothes smoking

I have never intentionally smoked my clothing. I think this would work well though. I have seen deer back in controlled burn areas within a day after it was burnt over. Native Americans use to do cleansing ceremonies that smoke was used in also. I am pretty sure that I have read that smoke kills...

    Fencing

Any agreements that are agreed upon that are different from the right hand rule can be recorded at the court house.

    spraying Brush Honey Suckle

Foliar spraying should be done starting in the late fall, when the native plants are dormant. In the spring before the sap is running go with basal bark or cut stump application. Those work in the fall as well. Thing to remember is that their is more than likely a huge seed bed there, so this...

    shivershield

Just wanted to let everyone know that Shievershield gave me excellent customer service. I was trying to get an order in later last night for a pair of insoles and a stadium seat, to try their products out. I did not get my Veteran status confirmed before midnight last night. This morning I got a...

Ground Hunt w/ calling -- mobile or not?

I have permission on an 80. I have pretty much figured the farm out of where deer are and are going. I base everything off of wind, and try to have some kind of setup for most winds. I have one spot that has two stands within 60 yds of each other and then a blind that is a hundred yds away. They...

    wind

Moved one last night. May try to sneak out and see if it is still there in the afternoon.

    November movement

Went and pulled cards last night. Lots of does out in the fields only saw two, 2 maybe 3 yr old bucks. Sat back and watched them before they figured out I was there. They were just feeding with them. On the cards there was only one buck chasing a doe. Bucks are still hitting the scrapes hard...

    Storms

I moved a ground blind tonight to hunt closer to a bedding area for the rest of the season and late season. I am hoping that it still there after the next few days.

    wind

I wouldn't be out doing that either, if had to go through timber to get where I want to be. There are going to be a lot of trees coming down between tonight and tomorrow. Being out on a boat would be a crazy move also. I would go ground pound an area that has little to no larger trees and...

    Cam Question

I shot a buck a few weeks ago, so I have not been back out but plan on taking a few does later on. How often do you all go into check cameras during the season?

Ground Hunt w/ calling -- mobile or not?

Call and wait a half hour then move. I would try to find places that have more sign and hang out there longer. Right now I would be traveling between doe bedding areas and feed. Go with minimal gear, so you can pick up and move in a hurry. If you see a good one moving off or on another ridge you...

    Tree Protectors Remove Or Not?

We are removing tree tubes from plantings since it is unfeasible for us to keep up on the maintenance that they require. If you can not mess with them at least twice a year they can be detrimental to trees. They need cleaned out. I would go with wire cages personally. You get a tree that is...

    Rage Deflection

This is my thinking. After the season this year I am going to start working up some logs to shoot. I have not had any issues with the Injexion 400 and NAP KillZone 100s @ about 450 gr., combined. Took a buck this year that went between the loser leg bone and tendon, through the heart and bounced...

    Base Layers

Go with wool, you will not be disappointed. I sweat walking in with a thin wool layer on and it is 10 degrees out. The wool still retains body heat even when wet. You do get what you pay fro with wool though.

How high is high enough... scent control?

I think you will be good. Haven't looked at wind speed for tomorrow though. With a steep drop off behind you, your scent is traveling far enough before dropping down and is probably dispersed anyway. Most of my stands are around 15 feet and I don't normally have scent issues. Hunting the right...
