    Always something new...

It seems every year I plant something new. This year it's bee keeper clover mix (came in great!), giant sunflowers and milo.. Last year was German Millet - great stand, and crimson clover, regular sunflowers - both failed plots. Every year about this time, I say I'm going to keep it simple and...

    Giant Sunflowers for rubbing posts

For saving pumpkin seeds, I've always just laid the seeds out flat on newspapers, seeds not touching. I flip the seeds every 3 or 4 days. Wait 10-14 days until they are nice and dry and then store in my basement in manilla envelopes. You probably get better and faster dry times with the...

Turning the corner in the real estate market?

I believe I see some softening in the market, especially for Rec ground....is it wishful thinking? I watch the market pretty close in my surrounding area and it "seems", even with the still small inventory, farms aren't being priced so high for the most part.... Sure, there's the one-offs that...

    Giant Sunflowers for rubbing posts

@Bucksnbears - is it necessary to cage them early on? I planted some this week as well and caged a couple, but most of them I didn't.

    Pumpkins

Mammoth sunflowers, found them at tractor supply inc, It's ok if they crush the bean stalks, the beans were just a companion crop, I expect some will survive. Sorry, misread your question...Pumpkins variety are porch pumpkins, you know, the kind everyone buys for halloween. When everyone is...

    Pumpkins

I did not water them immediately but it rained within the next couple days of planting. Today I planted giant sunflowers on the suggestion of bucks n bears, and I fertilized and gave them about a gallon of water to jump start them. Same process as planting pumpkins and same planter... Ran into...

    ISO Shingle Oaks

So this is the results 12 days after doing foliar spraying and basal bark spraying with 5% triclopyr mix. The trees in the brush pile (an old crp clearing) was basal bark sprayed, and the small trees next to the brush pile were foliar sprayed. Mostly shingle oak outside the brush pile. For those...

    Pumpkins

Well, my pumpkins and beans are up, I didn't know if the pumpkin seeds were viable still as they were gathered from pumpkins from 2020 and 2021, hence why I planted 6-8 per mound instead of 2 or 3. Looks like they are just fine!

    Pumpkins

I sprayed glyphosate 2x over a couple weeks then disked the field. Then I came back around with a tiller to get a nice seed bed.. I then broadcast soybeans as a companion crop and harrowed them in. Then walked the field dropping 6-8 pumpkin seeds every 5 steps and covering them with dirt...

    ISO Shingle Oaks

Yes it is! When we initially got into land, we tried to put everything into crp as I knew less about row cropping and even less on how to vet a tenant. These days, we're taking the good ground as the crp contracts expire and putting them back into row crop. Still have 5-7 years to go! I have...

    ISO Shingle Oaks

I keep trying different things... Last year I used a 2%crossbow solution doing a broadcast spray from an ATV. It seemed to set them back last year, but I didn't think it killed them as that field is full of them again this year. This year I've treated a spot with a 5% tryclopyr solution with a...

    CRP Design Question

I'm not familiar with those individual programs but it's important to me to understand the mid management practices required of each one. It might be important to you knowing how to split the fields. How about food plots in those programs or do you not desire them/have other means for plots? ...

    ISO Shingle Oaks

NW Missouri, just outside of Denver Mo is the farm I'm fighting these on trying to keep my crp clean....... I'm sure there are smaller ones that could be dug up as well but I didn't look that closely as the hundreds of 2 and 3 footers had my attention..... let me know as I'll probably try to...

    Acorns to Oaks!

Did you say most of your potted carry over chestnuts die? I don't like hearing that as I was going to try that this year for the first time. Is the work around to just get them in the soil or I wonder what the solution is to that....

    Acorns to Oaks!

I think peat moss is the ticket for stratification in the fridge. I initially just had mine in a plastic bag with a moist paper towel but after 3 months of not seeing much progress I put moist potting soil in the bags for another couple months and that seemed to help get them going.

    Acorns to Oaks!

Chestnuts will die if frozen under 25 degrees F is my understanding. don't know where you're at, but many will mulch them if planting as a nut outside and winter temps dip below that. I put mine in the fridge and it took 4-5 months for me to see roots. I seen some guys say it only takes a...
