    Something I learned about EHD….

A friend and whitetail expert told me that buzzards will not consume a deer that’s died from EHD. There may be some buzzard activity shortly after a deer dies, but they will not stick around for long. I saw a deer in September at 5 pm and other than his having saliva dripping from his mouth, he...

    Frost, freeze warning tonight….

How cold does it need to get to eliminate those EHD midge bugs? My weather forecast shows 31 degrees, light wind, and clear.

    Advice on killing poison ivy…

I have sprayed some well established poison ivy a half dozen times over the summer. I’ve left it alone for a month and allowed some new growth. I’ve used only Roundup. I have both Roundup and Tordon RTU available. Some of the vines are the size of my ring finger. What herbicide(s) can I use...

    Drone spraying herbicides…is that done?

I killed and burned some cedars 2.5 years ago. Autumn olives just blew up. I hope to get rid of most of them and they are not easily accessible on foot. I’ve wondered if a drone could be utilized for spraying. I plan on following with a tree planting the following year. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Advice on dam erosion prevention….

My dam has had major work done on it, with lots of dirt moved. I have an old harrow I can use on it. I’d like some advice on what to plant on it. I have some cereal rye, wheat, and Crimson clover. My local go to, Iowa-Missouri Hybrids is temporarily closed. Is there somewhere else I could...

How to increase the number of bucks….

These are a couple of random thoughts with little serious research. Prevent the use of more cross bows. It’s hard to allow greatly increased use of something and then try to take it away. Don’t wait on this. Shorten the deer season….consider starting later, ending earlier, shorten...

Assuming you have the power in 2024...

Name 2 things you would change, prevent, start, or stop, to improve the Iowa hunting or wildlife resource. Skip discussed a lot of things in his podcast. What issues have the most potential for improvement, in your opinion? Thanks in advance.

    Comparing recreational property costs….

Kind of a random and general question…how do the prices of recreational property in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri compare?

    Rope…

I checked out a friend’s farm and cabin on a new property he and his wife invested in last year. Beautiful hills and many large pines, and an incredible pond that he stocked last fall. 80 degrees here, a little too warm, but cooler weather heading this way. Driving in, I saw a strutting gobbler...

    New switchgrass plot…

I’m putting in about an acre of switchgrass in the next few weeks. Tentative plans are to spray and then drill a mix of Cave In Rock and Kanlow. This will be my first experience with Kanlow. Your thoughts????

    Looking for 55 gallon barrels…

I’m building a small dock soon and am looking for 1-2 x 55 gallon, plastic, sealed “blue barrels “. Anyone know where some are available near Van Buren, Henry, Jefferson counties? Of course, I’m looking for a bargain. Thank you!

Questions on minerals, garlic, EHD, and general stuff…

I’ve heard garlic and at least one brand of minerals mentioned as helping prevent EHD. How does that work and is there documented proof? I’ve heard from an expert that deer aren’t attracted to minerals after June. I’ve read it mentioned here that might not be the case everywhere or maybe with...

    More on pheasants rebound...

I find Skip's discussion on the pheasant rebound he's seeing in his neighborhood interesting and encouraging! I've been visiting Iowa for 18 years. I had never seen a pheasant in the wild until traveling in Iowa. My close friend, Paul Knox, checked my trail cams years ago, and my favorite...
