I think a healthy ratio is still important but when numbers were way higher in the 2000’s the ratio was still very good too in most places. Certainly doesn’t have to be one or the other. But agreed 1:1 doesn’t seem like it needs to be the goal by any means
Someone linked a Facebook post by Tim wells in this thread….ive said for many years that it’s going to take those with the biggest platforms to get this message out to the masses and change public perception. Lakoskys, Drurys, Bowmars and the like can have significant influence on what hunters...
LOVE this post Skip and anyone can search my history of posts to confirm this but I’ve been beating this drum (w few if any supporters) as loud as I can for 10 years. This is not a new issue, been this way since the bad ehd outbreak in 2012 but for whatever reason it has taken 12 years for the...
Will say that last July Trump claimed hed have the war stopped in 1 day if elected. Wonder if that lady (can’t recall her name) that was doing that interview that is clearly a left leaning journalist has thrown that in his face yet. Regardless, I love 90% of what he’s doing/done so far.
Just recently had my farm flown and do seem to recall a recent bed leaving enough of a heat signature to appear but the drone operator just switches to the camera to see that it’s not an actual deer so no reason it should be inaccurate if done properly
Totally with ya….i just want to go psycho on idiots that are intentionally trespassing, shed poaching, or breaking game laws. Nothing worse. Found a fresh arrow w a broad head laying/sticking in the ground near one of my stands like they were hunting out of my stand and missed a deer. Would give...
I guess my original post has turned in to more of a for/against or pros/cons of recovering deer w them and just want to note that deer recovery had NOTHING to do with my post. Which is fine.
Just want to clarify for everyone……
-Intention or thought process was NOT to use drones for recovery...
I agree with you. That’s why I’m envisioning this being something at more of a DNR level. This is a management tool for state agencies or maybe conservation groups NOT something the hunting public should be doing. It has to be done on a large enough scale to provide accurate trends. Me and you...
So it probably is never an exact science but an educated drone operator can tell you out of the 20 bucks that n your farm how many were in the 150-170 range and how many were 170 plus. They can zoom right in on them and tell you if the buck has a drop tine or has shed for example. I’m simply...
Agreed about the wrong hands part for sure and the stiff penalties if caught. Thats why I’m kinda thinking this would be a dnr led deal or better yet a conservation group led by folks like Skip that could provide this data up the food chain and take some of the management or at least data...
Yea I kinda thought the same thing. Would need to be a very general report from the dnr…..a few different charts showing buck:doe ratios, total deer #’s, and then the quality breakdown. Nobody would really know other than maybe by county name where these controlled surveys would be done.
I...
Really excited to have my farm (and my neighbors on two sides) flown this week. Chatting w the guy that is coming out to do it tonight for quite awhile and what a fascinating job he has. I think I’m more excited to talk to him about his insight on the state of the deer herd in the Midwest then I...
Much respect for Winke. Have learned a lot watching him over the years and he seems like a solid dude. But I sure don’t agree w him on his philosophy on does/deer density. His old farm had a ton of deer and he was killing Mega giants. EHD hit that farm, far less deer, and he had nowhere near the...
Thoughts on the black plastic piping I put around the base of my trees? We thought we might be adding a layer of protection from the rabbits w them on at least during the winter but maybe they’re not a good thing for the tree come spring/summer? Noticed u didn’t have them on yours. How about...
