    Custom farming

I've been considering hiring out to custom farm some ground I have. Who else custom farms their ground and what tips can you give someone who wants to do the same? Why did you decide to custom farm as opposed to cash rent the ground? What should I prepare myself for on this journey? Tia

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

Good post. Too much of the wrong kind of debt servicing takes away a lot of progress on building wealth. Cars, CC, even the wrong kind of education. My first house was 520sf, and cost $21k...lol.. It is about priorities to a large degree. I can't believe the number of coffee shops around our...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

66.37a tillable. He said his best soil farm.... I didn't ask his APH on the farm, and he didn't say, instead he used the "lots' of money out there, people buying ground at any cost, adding to their thousand acres they paid $400/a for back when and cost averaging it out ,marketing lane.... He...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

This topic is just too good to leave alone. A lot of us think about where prices are headed probably at least once a week. I had a neighbor call me and offer to sell me his 80 for 11k an acre yesterday. His farm touches my Harrison County Mo farm on the south...The same Harrison County farm I...

    Brush law

Ok, I'll try again. At what %mix are you guys using? I've been using the lable rates and not seeing the results. I've been spraying June/July for foliar application. Also using a non-ionic surfactant. Are you guys mixing hot or something? Just not sure what's going on. Try not to spray during...

    Card pull yesterday

I watch a coyote pestering a doe right outside my cabin window on Friday. The doe would chase it trying to stomp it, then go back to an area behind the shed, the coyote would then follow until the doe chased it off again. Must've been a fawn back there the doe was trying to protect. I watch them...

    Brush law

Does Iowa have anything called a brush law where you have to keep brush cleared from middle of road thru right off way easement? I haven't heard of anything on in Iowa. Missouri does and I've been dealing with it for the 2nd time in 14 years. The ordinance says its so they can mow and maintain...

Root rake or flat bottom (rock) grapple?

My tree shear does not have the grapple attachment, it's just a shear, and in my limited use, a 4" tree is about the max I can shear with it, even though it's rated for 8" trees. If it won't shear it, I use it as a tree puller and rock the tree back and forth and lift. Yeah, hard on the shear...

Root rake or flat bottom (rock) grapple?

What do you guys find most useful day to day? Thinking about a rock grapple to move trees and pile up. It "looks" like a flat bottom grapple would allow more material to be moved, but I've never used either. Something like in the pic is what I'm thinking.. Or, is there something else that...

    Future of CRP

It won't matter much this time, as it'll be the first reenrollment, and when it's time to re enroll next time, I'll have forgotten... But I'll make a note of it in my file to ask them to check. Thx!

    Future of CRP

I don't recall everything we planted, but after 15 years some are 10' tall, maybe taller. I remember seeing red bud, and evergreens (volunteer) in there this spring, and in our tree plantings I usually included walnut, oaks, etc.

I'm waiting to hear back from my FSA office. They too are short handed. When I called Tuesday they said they just found out about the signup themselves and were having meetings that day to understand the criteria. I emailed them the 3 contracts I wanted to re-enroll. One thing that might be...
