    Food plot clearing

Ive had success of using brush to funnel and screen food plots. I agree with above though you don't want to over do it. Put some thought into how you do it and don't create a total barricade. I cleared out a 2 acre area and used brush on maybe 25% and in one solid line laying at a circular 45...

St. Jude Fundraiser- Skip Sligh Land Consult & 10 Acres of TSI with Drake Lamb

Is east central IL too far away from these guys to travel?

    Orchard locations?

Great advice above. I would absolutely plant a couple of kieffer pear trees in the woods plot you describe above. Sounds like a killer spot and the fruit trees would just make it that much better.

    Hawk blinds

Ive went all in on banks after starting with redneck. Figerglass doesn't hold up long term and they aren't air tight enough for me. I own 15 stump 4s and after the improved door system they are hard to beat.

CRP VIDEO- Reasons to plant & enroll….

Great info video and very well done! Thanks for sharing Sligh. In regards to burning crp/ switch grass stands etc. Say you had 4 ten acre feilds. Would you burn one of these 10 acre fields to make up 25% or would you burn say 2-3 acres of each field in rotation?

    Removing culls from a farm

Great post Sligh. I think its exactly what needs to be done on our place and I agree the sooner the better. Im going to try and get a couple of the worst culprits taken during youth if possible. Ive been studying trail cam pics and especially video to see who are the worst bullies and there...

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

Great deer, but Id have to give him the pass... Otherwise Id always wonder what he could have been at 5. To me he's got too much upside to take him at 4 years old. Im guessing him in the mid 60s right now. Id expect him to put more beam length on which is the biggest thing he is lacking.

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

This is the same scenario that plays out for me and to be honest I pass both deer hoping to catch up to a real stud at some point in the season. The top deer Id shoot last week of season if he walked by me. Problem is too many of these crappy genetic deer are making it through to the next year...

    Removing culls from a farm

Im sure this could be true to some degree as we have lost some good young deer, but for the most part I take the blame for not making it enough of a priority. Ive been concerned about putting pressure on the farm and save the culling for the last 3-4 days of season and you know how that goes...

Thanks for the feed back. Im looking forward to the management end of it all and I know this will be an important part of it!

    Removing culls from a farm

Skip how many bucks do you think you typically remove on any given year on a 400 acre farm? Youth season is a really good idea. Its tough to expect buddies to continually use their tag on a 100" deer year in and year out isn't it? Do you reward them with taking a good deer some where along the...

    Removing culls from a farm

Im facing the daunting task of removing the crapper bucks off a 400 acre farm in order to keep some good genetic 3 year olds around. Im sure you guys have dealt with this so I was wondering how some of have dealt with this in the past. The challenge is getting enough guys willing to take them...

    Random Thursday question/thought on genetics.

I strongly agree with what you said Midwest. Problem I have is figuring out who will harvest the amount of crapper bucks that need removed. No one wants to use a tag on them so they continue to grow older and more aggressive.

Converting 160ac pasture to wildlife mecca

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but Ive worked on my own farms for the last 20+ years. Ive converted farm ground to cover using a wide variety of oaks in crp programs etc.. Currently Im taking a pasture similar to you and putting it to cover and this will consist of trees and switch grass...

What’s more valuable for holding/producing/hunting deer? Crops vs crp?

In a perfect world where income didn't matter Id say keep out 15-20 acres for food at a minimum and make the rest some type of cover that is lacking on your farm and surrounding farms. In fact I'm in the process of doing just this right now. Were planting 25 acres of trees, 13 acres of switch...

    Another Skip and Land Podcast

I agree a lot of great information in this podcast! Thanks for sharing Skip! Ive been doing a lot of things very similarly for many years. A lot of things I had to learn the hard way just like you. Especially with the fruit trees and how critical it is to protect them not only from the deer...
