    80 acres - Lucas Co

Only 20 minutes from Indianola and 45 min from WDM lies this diverse 80-acre property offering an excellent mix of habitat, recreation and income. The north half features rolling oak ridges, grassy cedar cover, and a secluded 1-acre food plot—ideal for holding whitetails. The south half...

I was just informed the rates for Decatur Co will be around $159, depending on the program. The contract I want to re-enroll is currently at 209. Ouch.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Something no one has mentioned are thermal scopes. I'm guessing its not huge numbers, but I suspect they do more damage than we all know. What's that old saying...Nothing good happens after midnight.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

We can all agree, there is an issue. So lets find a solution. Something that gives some of the advantage back to the resource, tipping the odds back in the deers favor. Back in the day, guys were impressed they killed a buck. Now, its easy. Too easy. Big bucks are obviously a little...

    Future of CRP

Just bringing this back to the top. Any updates or chatter? Would you guys be reluctant to buy a farm with a CRP contract expiring in the next year or 2, if you're hoping to re-enroll?

    Brassicas

Who is taking advantage of the moisture and getting their fall plots planted now before the August heat and drought? Obviously its a bit early, but I'm contemplating it. Anyone else?

Has anyone heard any new chatter? I'm really curious to see if they'll re-enroll expiring contracts or shut that down.

    Clover

I'd like to get crimson clover going in 2 of last years brassica plots to help get nitrogen in the ground, build soil, suppress weeds, etc. Would you guys plant the crimson soon and then terminate in late summer, to plant brassicas again this fall? OR wait, and add the crimson to my brassica...

    Early spring?

The last several years I have seen the first ticks in Feb and the numbers obviously increase as warmer days tick by(pun intended). I've been out in the woods and grasses quite a bit this spring and have yet to see 1.

    Goals

Several years ago, I was in a similar spot. I killed the deer and it didn't bring me the joy that it should have. He ended up being my biggest deer at the time scoring in the mid 80s, but deep down knowing he was only 4, it hurt me more than it satisfied me. May sound silly to some but my goal...

Thoughts on deer prospects this year?

There is one factor no one seems to talk about. Settling. The age structure hasn't recovered from the last 10 years of EHD. Rather than having a handful of 5 and 6+ yr olds to chase like in the good old days, guys hunt younger deer because that's the best they have to hunt. How will the age...

    What's next for Republicans?

10 Harris signs for every Trump sign in West Des Moines. It's pretty sad and hopefully not a sign of things to come. But I'm guessing the silent majority, like myself, doesn't have a sign out front.

Assuming you have the power in 2024...

No sir, but our gun seasons are open from the beginning of Dec to Jan 10. Thats 35+ days. Add in any ridiculous shed buck rifle season afterwards and we're closer to 45+ days. Straight walls, custom smokeless, and then centerfires. It's amazing some of these deer make it to 5 yrs old anymore...

Assuming you have the power in 2024...

-1 Buck, floating tag. -End Party(tag sharing) hunting for all. -Must own a minimum of 20 acres to qualify for a Landowners tag (if we kept the LO tags) -Get rid of 1 of the 2 "shotgun" seasons. Gun 1+2+Muzzy season = over a month long. Waayy too long. -Ditch the ditch hunting rules. For...
