    The Talk

I was that dude when I was a kid. 14-16 years old. Only saw about 5 bucks a year & was a big deal if got one. All were 1.5’s. Once I shot a handful & realized places existed with older bucks…. Quickly changed. The guys back home in those areas- seems like the older crowd still does it to...

    Mulching jobs

Man- that’s really low cost!!! I’d also say this on other side of it…. Running a high end disc with crazy flow- u running around a $150k+ unit @ new prices… if a guy got hired out to use that, it would be crazy to do it for under about $300 an hour. So- $100/hour for a drum…. That makes...

    Mulching jobs

What’s goal of the job? Disc wins in 90% of scenarios IMO. Throws bigger chunks all over is maybe a downside but u can back drag them to grind up. Drum is smaller chips but it also makes that area full of mulch so things don’t grow. Drum speed vs disc speed is a huge difference, like I...

    Mulching jobs

One thing to keep in mind…. A drum mulcher runs about 3x slower than a disc. So- if hire out drum… should cost less. In theory at least. I’ve ran a lot of machines with best drums (tuned to machine with new teeth) vs discs and im Probably closer to 4x faster with a disc mulcher. $130/hour...

The #1 Battle & issue we fight for in Iowa….

I’ve had this discussion with folks from the everyday hunter, legislators, casual hunters, non-profit orgs, DNR, SERIOUS Hunters, etc. Along with posts on this site. I wanted to put a fine point on explaining this & have the dialogue. Our #1 issue above all others is fighting for a rebound...

Need ideas to fix this EHD pond

COINCIDENCE???? Over 15 years - if we find ehd …. It’s in one pond. Always same one. For sure more silted in, not as deep. Shallow banks, etc. I actually just looked at it on aerial to measure it to make a plan on probably knocking dam out & then deciding what to do after. Noticed this...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

Agree 100%. Our “4 gun seasons” is genius as it makes folks choose & reduces pressure for all the gun seasons while many other states have one main gun or allow folks to hunt ALL of them. Ehd & doe quotas (farm bureau) have been the hardest impact on iowa for sure. Right up there in many part...

    Wood ducks

Was with Marty who is member here on his place. Tons of wood ducks & even an eagle nesting. He mentioned adding wood ducks boxes. I need to dig into that more & see how much to do those or how helpful they r. I’m clueless on that stuff.

Need ideas to fix this EHD pond

I got a bigger one im dealing with. It’s a “pond”. Yours can be dozed in easy or tiled or for more $ - Made into a good pond. Mine…. Think im gonna rip the dam down with excavator drain it bone dry. & push all junk out with dozer & make deep, steep & clean. Done this a couple times. Works...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

EVERYTHING has its +/-‘s & there’s no regulations or regulation changes that will make all people happen all the time! Every state has problems- even “the best” are facing some of same problems of “the worst”. Or perhaps OTHER bad regulations. No perfect state or system & EVERY STATE has...

    Beans and…..

above is great & used for high yields due to more sun, etc. I’d say splitting the field would work - even if 50/50 if it’s VERY BIG. The more edge u have creates more problems…. But If you fence it…. No problem. If you don’t fence…. Say u needed “5 acres” on Beans to be successful … you...

    ground cover

Brome, fescue, clovers (preferably red). I’d be putting oats down with it as well 100%. U can buy “waterway mixes” - they are sod forming & hold the soil. I’m not a cool season grass fan but they are critical in highly erodible situations.

    Timber Stand Improvment

Yep- above is right. So- ask the office “what’s my max cost share per acre”. They should say something like “75% of up to $250 per acre” for example. Or “the most we reimburse is $180” for example. So- u ask what % that is …. Just bill for more than your cost share pays as they never pay...

    What's next for Republicans?

Both sides should agree on the VAST MAJORITY of this. This is EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Listen when you’re in the car, etc. Wow. Having competent adults with talent, skills & common sense bettering our disastrous federal government is amazing to see. The general public hearing this & understanding...

When I go to “like” someone’s post. Doesn’t have any options from iPhone for example. I can either click like or it’ll highlight it (like to copy it) where before it would pop up with different emojis. Id really like if we could add the pregnant man emoji too BTW. ;)

    Harvesting switchgrass seed

I did it :). Stripper head & a clauss combine. Can get a brand new of each set up for maybe a total of only $700-800k :). It was a pain so I didn’t do anymore. Now- they make these pull behind units or these ones that go to side- any tractor & even ones for UTV…. Can pick them up for like...

    Timber Reserve Bill SF219

I write above & simmer on this as I drive around seeing countless dozed fields & fresh piles of trees to be burned EVERY DAY. Like- I could take pics with my phone TODAY & post 6-12 different farms. As it sits - TODAY- with FR in place… we are losing timber in sensitive areas & more is being...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

That’s crazy. Someone just “had to have it” & didn’t care about throwing $ out the window. Or - is gonna be in trouble if they NEED to sell it. All good, I get it but that’s nuts. Why wouldnt a guy just pay $1-2k more & buy non-wrp?!?!?

    Timber Reserve Bill SF219

For every dollar they raise with the TAX increase, we can domino this out where it literally will cost “us” people & state 5-10x the value they pull in. Economics 101…. Tax what you want less of…. Let’s say, 1 million dollars in TAX revenue…. On top of a county like mine where our taxes have...
