#1 target is down

My son Mark, on his 30th birthday today, took out our #1 target with 3 minutes of shooting light to spare. Recovery is underway, I will post more pics once we have them. This is a 7.5 old survivor and one of our smarter bucks through the years. He has been a pretty regular homebody over the past few years and we were very focused on tagging him this year.

I had him at 75 yards on the 24th of Oct, I believe, otherwise, we have been tickling the edges of our farm on these wacky ESE winds, not wanting to "go in" on a bad wind. This afternoon, that patience and strategy paid off...a WSW wind for the last 90 minutes of the day allowed Mark to get in a great spot and at almost last light, he was able to grunt him to 22 yards and make a good shot.

There was little to no blood trail to follow, but he only went about 40-50 yards and piled up. Mark found him in the dark via smelling him from downwind. More to follow...

The buck is hanging in the neighbor's barn, all is well. Pics tomorrow AM. We have sheds and pics going back several years on this joker. Trail cams showed him more active in daylight this year than in previous years...a trend that we have seen before. Where a 7+ year old seems to get bolder and more active in daylight in his last year or two.

Stud buck, so cool to build the history and finally seal the deal.

"Mark found him in the dark via smelling him from downwind.". This is one of the most relatable and funny statements. I don't know how many times I've smelled the buck in the last 10-20 yds.
