Our group got 13, nothing worth any size really. Saw some monsters, I missed one. Stepdad got his first with shotgun. The deer were just everywhere, our best luck came tonite in the last half hour.
we had our best year i got the smallest ones but i shot two 6 points and we got two 14 points and a 9 so far, one is 11 with 3 points broken off it is 23 inch inside spread it scores 170 and a 7 with 7 broken off tines, it had 21" inside spread scored 130 possibly 160 with all points and a 9 point that scored 150 with 19 inch inside spread its back tines 12 13 inch long tines. so we arent doing to bad.
Filled my Farm Unit Antlerless tag yesterday morning. Got a nice big doe I'd been watching in the fencerows behind my house. My cousin was right there with me. Nothin like making a stalk with a buddy.
The theme music from Jeopardy is playing right now in the office of "Iowa Whitetail" patiently waiting for some shotgun hunters photo's to show up in our e-mail box.
Saturday morning 7:20 nice buck came in to a scrape which I had doctored with Code Blue gel. This buck came from up wind with his nose twitching and started to circle downwind.I grunted to get him to stop and shot him at 25 yards with the Knight rifle. He ran over a hundred yards with huge holes through both lungs. There was even lung material at the point of the shot. Pretty tough old boy. Nice 9 point with an 18" spread.
Sunday evening my son shot a 10 point that looked like a carbon copy of mine. We believe mine was 6 1/2 years old and his was 3 1/2 years. Had a great gun season. Did not see or hear as many hunters as other years, also did not see as many deer either.
i have 2 nd season but while out looking at a new spot sunday morn a guy stopped to show us his a 19 point non typical 5 drop tines and a 21" inside spread.
our hunting group got 4 , 2 does and 2 big bucks!! a 10 pointer and my first shotgun buck a very nice 8 pointer. i shot it on a dead spring acrost the field, 2nd shot, dropped it in its tracks!!! VERY EXCITED!!!!
Congratulations to the discriminating HUNTERS who are harvesting MATURE bucks. It is damn tough to have the self restraint to avoid shooting those young bucks. When one decides to hatrvest mature bucks it changes the whole hunt into HUNTING
I decided to shoot only a buck this year. It was the first morning and I was hunting with my dad on on the opposite side of a ridge top, and seeing deer everywhere. Then a deer came down and my dad said "It looks like a buck, look and see if he has any horns" So I did and didn't see any. After he trotted past my dad looked through the binoculars and did see it was a 6pt.Opps
.
So we kept creeping along the top and now it was almost 10:00A.M. so we were sitting there for a while and 2 deer came up the hill and dad said he looked like a buck, so I got a rest on the tree in front of me and waited for him to walk from behind the brush, when he did I shot, and he ran to the opposite hill(about 20yds away)and started going up but then rolled down and layed. We waited a few minuets andwent to look at him and he brought his head and looked around! So we slowly sat down, soon a group of does came then he tried getting up so I shot again.
heres is a really big 8pt my Grandpa shot. It is his second largest deer.
Young buck, congratulations on the nice buck! I enjoy your posts on this website. I wish I new as much about deer and deer hunting when I was your age!
2002 shotgun season was great than last year, 10 guys shot 13 bucks and 2 doe in lee county with 5 non resident from pennsylvania and 6 local iowan hunters are work altogether party for 4 years straight none of monster buck but saw some big bucks. we hope come back next year. big buck
The past two shotgun seasons have been a little bitter sweet. Last year I shot a nice 9 point buck but, would have past on him if he weren't already injured. He was limping severly on his front right shoulder, turns out he was hit during bow season and had developed a very bad infection. I felt good about the kill but was unable to harvest any of the meat due to contamination. This year sort of the same story. I had passed on a few medium sized bucks during the first morning. Non of the potentials were harvestable. I usually try to lay off the 2-3 year old bucks hoping for growth and maturity. Well this year sort of the same deal. I had been bow hunting all year and seeing some real nice bucks in the area, anyway hoping to land one of the larger bucks I ran into another injured buck which was about 2-3 years of age he had been shot through the jaw and would have starved in time. I hate it when hunters take pot shots at deer. anyway being the mercinary that I am I ended the bucks suffering. I just once want a season where I don't have to play the mercinary. I was able to harvest this buck though. I guess there's always a chance I could harvest one with my bow, but it will be hard to get to the big ones after the shotgun seasons are done. I know it not always about the big ones. haha
Here's a photo of the buck I shot first season with my muzzleloader. He suffered from a bit of ground shrink, but still a nice buck and a huge animal. Unfortunately, my "photographer" gets a failing grade for not recognizing a shadow covering most of the deer
