HUSH: Help Us Stop Hunger
HUSH is a cooperative effort among deer hunters, the Food Bank of Iowa, meat lockers and the Iowa DNR. The two main goals of HUSH include:
(1) reducing the deer population while
(2) providing high-quality red meat to the needy in Iowa.
Whether you're a deer hunter, a locker owner or volunteer in your community, there is a vital role you can play.
Reducing the deer population means a higher percentage of does need to be harvested. The DNR is approaching this problem in 2005-'06 in three different ways:
•Issuing an additional 30,000 doe hunting permits
•Extending and expanding several deer seasons
•Expanding the HUSH program state-wide
As a hunter, consider buying extra antlerless-only deer permits to help reduce the deer population. By participating in HUSH hunters can continue to hunt after they would normally stop and thus help reduce the deer population and provide high-quality venison for the needy in Iowa.
You can donate any legally taken deer of any sex from any season. For the avid deer hunter in Iowa this presents itself as the perfect opportunity to hunt more deer and do something positive for the local community. Hunters must continue to purchase their deer license, which now includes a $1 deer surcharge to fund the HUSH program.
"If it were not for the $1 HUSH surcharge on deer permits, HUSH would remain active in less than half the state," said Ross Harrison of the DNR. Harrison originated HUSH, and coordinates its activities for the DNR. <font color="red">Originally he proposed insurance companies pay 10 cents per vehicle insurance policy to fund HUSH. That would have raised about the same amount of money as the extra $1 on the cost of deer permits. Insurance companies would wind up saving more than double that in avoided accident claims on HUSH deer, but the insurance companies balked at the proposal.</font>The previous two years, HUSH was funded by donations from businesses, organizations and individuals, and from the DNR budget.
Participating lockers skin, bone and grind the meat to two-pound packages of pure ground venison. A local social services agency distributes the venison to needy Iowa families in the area. The nearly 100 lockers that have agreed to participate in 2005-'06 will receive $60 for each processed deer.
Partnering with the Food Bank of Iowa and their affiliates throughout the state, high quality protein many Iowans are lacking in their diet will now be available in the form of pure ground venison. The Food Bank of Iowa will receive $5 for each deer to cover administrative costs.
Operating only in the central one-half of Iowa in its first two years, a total of 3,508 deer were donated to HUSH in 2003 and 2004. That resulted in 175,400 pounds or 87.7 tons donated of venison, or 701,600 quarter-pound servings to Iowa's needy. This year with the $1 surcharge on deer permits, HUSH hopes to receive about $350,000 and process 5,000 deer statewide to yield one million, quarter-pound servings of venison.
