2005 Hunting Legislation Update

As most of you know 2005 Iowa Legislation has begun. Currently Study Bill - SSB 1147 has been introduced by the Senate Committee and it has some very positive changes. Yet one change, eliminating the cap on antlerless non resident tags, has however struck a nerve with Iowa Sportsman.

Sect 4.3.c
[ QUOTE ]
The commission shall annually determine the number of nonresident antlerless deer only deer hunting licenses that will be available for issuance.

[/ QUOTE ]

We need emails or phones calls to members of the House and Senate Natural Resource Committees. All communication should be polite, respectful and to the point.

Let them know your position on the negative impact that removing the cap and dramatically increasing antlerless license sales could have for Iowa Sportsman and Women.

* Party Hunting - each year NR hunters are figuring out the system - this tag allows them entry into the state each and every year to hunt bucks legally.

* Non Resident Antlerless tag sales have increased 235% in the past 3 years - from 1054 in 2002 to 2477 in 2004. If the cap is removed and we continue this trend sales of 5,000+ antlerless tags will be sold by 2008 and 8,000+ tags by 2012. tags sold by year (2002 - 1054, 2003 - 1886, 2004 - 2477*) *in 2004 NR tags sold out yet due to ELS constraints, void etc, only 2477 were sold yet hunters were turned away from purchases.

* Land Access - because all NR hunters can gain access to hunt in the state each year a higher demand will be placed on our private lands - thus further displacing resident hunters - only 15% of the tags are sold for the Holiday season (293 in 2003 and 349 in 2004)
**** including your thoughts on losing land and hunting rights
**** the possible adverse population concerns of leasing etc

* Resident Hunters are shooting more does and managing the deer herd. Resident hunters purchased approximately 80,000 doe tags, 46,000 more than 2004. This is very significant considering we purchased a maximum 34,000 total in 2003.
