I was wondering if anybody has a good idea of when the second rut should occur? I am still hunting a buck and would like to focus my efforts around the 2nd Rut. Anybody have an idea or pase experiences?

Count 28 days from the peak of the primary rut and that would be the peak of the secondary rut. Really research when the exact primary rut occured in your area so that you can count 28 days after that to really pin point the secondary rut otherwise you could miss it. The secondary rut tends to be shorter than the prime rut. It may last just 48 hours from what I have seen and heard.

once it starts it never ends, theres always a doe somewhere out there that is ready to breed, just got to find her

goodluck!!!

It seems like the northern tier states see the rut between Nov 1 thru Nov 20, which according to the experts puts the second estrus about 30 days after that. I've not had any great success in the second rut even though I've witnessed bucks chasing does. The bucks don't seem as aggressive and on a whole it would seem very subdued. Good luck dress warm

I just got back from my sundown drive and saw six bucks escorting does, mostly on fencelines away from cover! The doe groups were on the timber edge comming out into the crop fields. You might want to step out of the woods and hunt some fenceline or waterways. I don't know! Just what I seen tonight. I'm going back out later with a few million more candle watts!

and see what else is going on. These were all good bucks that I think took the FEW hot does out of the woods and away from the other does and smaller bucks. It looked alot like about 28 days or so ago. One thing is for sure! Six does will get bred tonight.

Once the does come into heat which runs Nov1-20 as the span of the primary rut in our area, does will usually cycle every 21 days until bred. The so called second rut is a myth in my opinion. I will see some does getting run in december and january but most is sporatic at best and being able to cue in on rut activity is a shot in the dark at best. I think any time out there is time well spent but this time of year, I rely on prerut rublines and late winter bedding areas/food sources. If you find the does, you will still find the bucks. I think the late season is easier hunting the big boys just because it is easier to narrow down the places they are frequenting.
