My 13 year old daughter Taylor scored on her first buck this weekend. I’ve worked hard to instill a “one shot, one dead deer” mind-set in her. In her short hunting career she has managed to fire 3 shots at live game and the results have netted 3 deer. Her first two deer were both mature does. This year she decided that she wanted a buck.
We were not able to hunt opening weekend due to her busy schedule (soccer, volleyball, football games, etc… and it about killed me) additionally, this past weekend we could not hunt Saturday morning due to another soccer game, but by 4:45 pm I had her in the woods. We set up along a fence line with a row of round bales at our back. We were overlooking a15 acre green field, surrounded by woods.
I again asked her what she wanted to hunt for and reminded her that if she was willing to put some time in that I thought we had a reasonable chance at a decent buck. She said that due to her schedule she wanted to take the first mature doe or any racked buck that presented a shot.
At 5:45 pm, five 1.5 yr old bucks entered the field. By 6:45, a 7 pointer and a forky had worked their way within her range, which based on her demonstrated ability with her .45 caliber scoped muzzleloader; I determined to be around 125 yards. It was getting dark and it did not appear that the bucks were coming closer (the rangefinder said they were still 112 yards away) so I determined it was time to shoot. I cranked her scope up to 6 power and told her to lay the gun across the top of the wooden fence post directly in front of us, get the cross-hairs on the second buck in line and shoot when she was ready. She did as I asked, took a deep breath, let it ½ out and squeezed the trigger. The 7 pointer tipped over immediately and she let out a war-hoot that echoed through the hills of NE Iowa. I’m still trying to wipe the smile off my face!
