Here is some information from a friend of mine that has this info coming over his desk daily. This is a scary situation people,if we let them get away with this then what are they going to try to do next?Is it time to contact the legislature's again? We need to put these guy's on speed dial!!
In regards to two specific bills you've recently received info on. HF 509: Chronic Wasting Disease Task Force. In my opinion this bill could put the the handling of CWD at penned locations in the hands of untrained lay people and those whose primary interest is protecting their own investments not the wild deer herd in Iowa. The state of Iowa (DNR) has an approved contingency plan, similar to what is being implemented at the national level, and best suited to control this disease if it appears in Iowa. The probable method of entry is through an infected pen-raised animal as seen in most of the rest of the country. The fox should not be watching the chicken house.
HF: 624 Domesticated Farm Deer. This bill would transfer pen-raised deer to the department of Ag. I see no reason why this department should be overseeing deer shooting preserves as would be allowed. The DNR would not be able to check these facilities for anything other than fish and game violations. Currently these are the DNR's responsibility and are examined annually. Movement of deer could not be enforced, fences could not be examined, etc. Dept. of AG will not be able to oversee this as they do not have officers in most counties. They have not been able to keep track of elk coming into this state in recent months which are known to have come from a farm where animals have tested positive for CWD. I do not feel AG is overly concerned with the potential threat to the wild deer herd in this state. In general, both of these are bad bills, are in the Senate and need to be squashed!!!!!
