A Michigan Yankee in King Whitetail's Court

Just got back from a weekend of scouting public land in NE Iowa for my January muzzleloader hunt and I have to tell you all that you live in a beautiful state!

I walked some pretty rugged country - lots of bluffs, elevation changes and thick cover. Research had led me to expect that, but it was good to get boots on the ground and see it in person

My wife and I met lots of friendly, helpful folks and had a great time. Next time we're bringing our trout fishing gear!

Got the highlights marked on my GPS and hopefully I'll find some deer there when I'm back with the smokepole. Picked out several potential stand areas for different winds, so we'll see - that's why they call it hunting, eh?

Lots of UP hunting to do between now and then with bow, rifle, handgun and muzzleloader but I'm sure it's gonna fly by

Bring your spotting scope and plan on doing some truck scouting that time of year. The deer will completely change between now and then, and you will be looking for food sources.

What part of the UP are you from. I was born in L'Anse, near Baraga, and lived in the UP until I was 11 (Eastern end). Man I miss the grouse and woodcock hunting up there.

Yep, it's all about the food - that's where I'll be nosing around.

Live in S Marquette Co, work in Marquette, and camp's in Houghton Co. Lived in da Soo for 5 years before moving westward.

Had 2 partridge in my driveway the other day when I got home from work! Of course we see them when there's no shotgun around....
