In my opinion timing is everything for the all day stand hunter.
I prefer the last day or so in October through the second week in November. I want to optimize my chances of seeing a number of bucks, when they are cursing for does to mate with.
Hunt where the does are, or along travel routes that bucks will use to seek out does to mate with.
Remaining in a tree stand for 13-14 hours can be a difficult experience. Without seeing occasional deer movement it is extremely hard to remain focused.
Please keep some of the following in mind when hunting all day from a tree stand: you must remain warm, drink fluids, eat to retain energy to maintain body heat, and relieve ones self. If you skip one of the above your chances of being uncomfortable on stand will greatly increase.
Please WEAR A SAFETY HARNESS. Most hunters who have truly hunted from a stand all day will tell you that they have become dozy, some have even fallen asleep.
Even when movement is slow, trust your stand placement judgment. Stay with it, you put that stand there for a good reason at the time. However I would suggest that one remain somewhat flexible. I have been known to hunt a stand until 11:00 a.m. them move to a different location if movement is slow for the remainder of the day.
Try not to put pressure on yourself, enjoy your time in the woods.
My step son and PMA member avidhunter and I will be hunting from Oct. 31st-Nov 7th. We plan to spend these days on stand all day or until we have harvested our deer.
Having said the above, I have spent many hours on a stand with my unfilled bow tag during the late season when it is freezing out.
