Alpha or Assault

I was lucky enough to get a set of four Lone Wolf climbing sticks for xmas and I will be getting a LW hang on stand and was wondering which one everyone thinks is better. I like the large platform on the Alpha but I didn't know if it was a little too big to carry through the timber and if the Assault was a better by. I know in a couple of Muddy's posts he said he had to lean down on the platform and it was a little small for that. Thanks in advance!

fwiw- I've never used the assault. I saved my pennies and bought an Alpha about 3 years ago. I like the 'extra' room personally. It isn't that heavy or bulky when carrying through the woods either. It seems like no matter how I set my stand up, the deer always come in from behind me, thus having to stand up, shuffle my feet to turn around and reach for my bow. I would think with the assualt, I would always be afraid of stepping off the edge.

Bought an Alpha and two sets of sticks this year.

Best purchase I ever made. Used to hate changing stands all the time. Now I can go wherever I want and change it in 20-30 min.

Like Buckcrack said the Alpha is big enough but not very bulky to carry in the woods. I also like the extra room on the platform that you get. It is very lightweight and easy to carry.

I know Muddy likes the assault but he is a lot more slender than myself and most of us. I would be afraid to turn around on the assault.

Either one would be a great buy just depends on your preference.

Someone must really like you to buy the LW sticks for you for Christmas. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Excellent Christmas present.

The Alpha ain't that bad to pack around to be honest.

Once you get used to the Assault there ain't no problems at all though. I think the new Assaults are the ticket, they have platform levelers like the Alphas. I'd really like to get one.

I like the Alpha, I am sure I could get used to the assault, but I will gladly carry the 2 extra pounds for the extra room. Even though I use the alpha, my size 14 feet still stick half way off the platform when I am sitting so that's the one I need. I did just purchase the sit and climb and handclimber though, so it will be interesting to see how well those work too.

IMO a person should give some thought into matching a treestand with his/her body size. On many treestands the weight rating isn’t over 300 pounds. Another consideration is the platform size. Do you have large or smaller feet? Do heights make you nervous?

I am one of those plus size guys, like plus or minus 250 pounds on any given day. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I like the larger Lone Wolf Alpha Hang-On stand. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I agree Ron, feet size would dictate my choice as well. I'd actually go for the mongo new size one myself. But I do not take down as often as these dead of the night ninjas.

I personally love the assault, but I am a smaller guy.

If you are going to do a lot of run & gun setups w/ your LW than I would get the assault. You will very much appreciate it if you do alot of them.

They are just so small and easy to put in a tree when you are hanging from one, especially if it's a big tree which can get kind of awkward hanging.

The Assault I have does not level as nice as the Alpha's. For that one reason alone it as not seen much action. It is almost like the cables are to short. Something like 35 degrees to 45 degrees, and I see about 43 degrees to 65 or 70 degrees on the Alpha.

TallTines are all of your Assualt like this one I have?

Mine is one of the new ones! I got it on a trade, it could be a defect, a second or they make them this way. Total adjustment is somewhere in the range I posted earlier. Except for this I would like the stand. I am putting these numbers in to give a visual, they are just ball park degrees.

10-4, I guess I wasn't understanding. But now I understand grasshoppa... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thanks for all of the replies everyone! I think I know which way I am going to go. Atleast I have some time to practice hanging it in a tree. Thanks again!
