Amazing Hunt!!!

Just to warn you upfront this will be long.

Well anyhow today was an amazing day. Hunting our usual public ground I decided I was gunna tak a little walk to the backside. The only way to get there was about a 2 mile walk. Well anyhow I walked there and got withing 40 yards of two does, I busted a basket rack, and saw a ton of turkeys including an all white one.

Well I finally get to where I want to be and, already there was a buck in my corner of the field, he was a little dink so I didn't worry and I pushed on slowly and he fed away. Well I sat down in a while and not much happened until about 540.

A medium size eight pointer came into the field about sixty yards away. I watched him for a while and he was nervous. but he had no Idea I was there. By the way I am hunting on the ground like usual and I have my back to a tree and to my left there is about a 10' square of brom grass.

Well the little eight is looking to my left so I raise up to look over the grass. In the middle of the field is A BIG deer. I got the Binos on him and he is a big ten with around 5 small 1 1/2 in kickers. His bases looked to be a little smaller than pop cans and he was outside his ears.

By the way we have been chasing 3 monsters for about 4 years on this ground. I believe this is one of them.

Sorry this is getting long.

Well anyhow i start to grunt and this gets the 8 riled up and he starts walking over to the monster. and they push each other around a little and the big guy snaps and bowls over the little eight and flips him on his back. The eight runs away. Now I am grunting and I am getting this deer mad but he wont come.

So I duck behind the grass and start breaking sticks and shaking trees while grunting. I get this guy heading my way!!!

I am making a ton of noise! He trots until he is about 80 yards and starts the swagger. Now it is pitch black in the timber where My dad is hunting about 2 1/4 miles away.

He even snort weezed!!! he keeps coming. He is standingbroadside at thirty and I decide to wait because he will come inside 15 and it will be a slam dunk!!

He gets to 20 I draw he is still clueless and I wait for him to stop and dad calls me!!! he wanted to see how it went since he knew I was having a good hunt since I talked to him earlier. He did't know I was on a field edge. I was gunna hunt the valley. (good thing I didnt)

I set my phone down in the leaves earlier so that I could see the time and even when on silent the lights go crazy and its almost dark. He sees the light and I see he is going to leave. I get it on him right on the point of his right shoulder And I let it fly right as he drops his head and turns into me and his antler defelcted the arrow.

That sounds like a horrible shot. but let me assure you, I had even kept my composer and made a good shot clean follow through and everything, It was one of thos you just know is gunna be right where you want it. It was just my luck. he ran a ways and stopped. B

By the way When he was in 30 yards. I COULD SMELL HIM!!! Whew he stunk!! it was my coolest deer hunting experience ever. I'll tell ya what he scores sometime during the rut.

Great story - that's too bad about the phone ringing....I had the same thing happen to me while putting a stalk on a bull moose...never again will I ever bring a phone into the field with me...it stays in the truck. I got by just fine in the days before cell phones, why carry them now is my thoughts. Even with them on complete silence I always have this fear that I didn't do something right and it's going to blow a hunt for me...so it stays in the truck...always.

The stories of you IA guys' public ground never cease to amaze me! Can't wait to see the pictures -- leave the phone in your pocket next time.

I completely understand, but what did people do before the day of the cell phone? That's what I always tell my wife when she gets mad at me for never answering it.

I know guys. When I go with my dad it's nice to be connected. Being 19 when i go with my dad, they still want to be safe. Public ground and early muzzy.

IA public ground stories are the best. There is a honey hole on every public ground in IA. Just got to work a little harder than anyone else. I have learned more from hunting on the ground on public land in the last five years than I ever did sitting in a stand my dad helped me put uo when I was younger. GO get em guys!!
