American Pioneer Powder

DOR, are you using loose powder? I have never used the stuff, loose or pellet. I hear that one needs to be especially careful to not let it pick up moisture (common sense with any powder). It has a higher affinity for moisture than most other powders.

I've heard of it. I have no experience with it though. I use Black Mag 3 absolutely love it. So many positives and i can't think of any negatives with it. It burns super clean, virtually no residue left behind. This weekend my dad and I went to the range to sight my gun in for late season. I probably shot 10-15 shots in it with out swabbing. My dad shot his 777 and had to swab between shots. No crud ring also. Love it and you should definitely consider using it.

I am using it this year but I will not be using after this season. I using the pellet form. It is a little cleaner but not enough to really notice. The pellets are square in shape and they are a little oversized so when you load them it shaves a little of the corners. I called American pioneer and they said it is normal. He said they had to make them square because 777 has the patent on the round pellets. They can not be very persise when it shaves a differant amount each time, some falls in the barrel and some falls outside of the barrel. Who really cares if you can shoot your gun over 5000 times without cleaning. Only a idiot would try. I would like to see them get the breech plug out after doing so.. Just my 2 cents Im not a big fan....

JNBronc- Yes I am using the powder form, I don't care much for the pellets in any brand.

The powder is so much more convinient. I buy it in the premeasured tubes and it is slick as can be. Love it!

As far as the moisture problem....I have had no issues with it. They advertise the the premeasured powder containers as being waterproof. They must be, because I washed one inside my coat pocket and it still shot fine after using it

Camoup,
I swore I read a post on here within the last month that someone said they would send anybody who asked the rest of their pellets. Wasn't you was it?

On another forum, a person was complaining about the pellets. Seems theirs had picked up some moisture. When they pulled the trigger, the powder had enough umph to lob the bullet down range, followed by a smoldering pellet. I don't think they were impressed with the "tracer" action

Sounds like the powder in waterproof containers is the way to go.

Speaking of tracers,

many, many years ago I was casting my own maxis and using Crisco as a lube in the rings and base. At the shot, enough black powder got pushed into the Crisco that it had the tracer round effect after dark. Found this out unloading one evening after a hunt. Another useless tidbit I throw out

JNR- That was me. I gave away almost a full bottle of sticks. It seemed to me that I was getting inconsistent burns, I didn't shoot that many shots but I just wasn't going to have any confidence in it. Changed to 777, right away I was able to rezero gun and it stayed there.

This link really doesn't deal with American Pioneer powder and the author is obviously a huge advocate of the Savage ML10, but you might consider reading it. FYI "Black" powder

I broke down and bought some of the Jim Shockey's GOLD, and I WAS NOT impressed. SAVE YOUR MONEY, is my suggestion. It's not any cleaner than T7... I bought the R/S loose powder, and have to say that the granules are a bit oversized? Not sure if it makes any difference on ignition.

Bottomline, it's a joke. The entire marketing/selling scheme is that it's supposed to be infinitely cleaner than T7 or other blackpowder substitutes, and it's simply NOT TRUE. Don't know how long they can last selling a product based on a flat out lie...???

Wish I could get my money back and then some, because I wasted my time using it, will stay with T7

We tried it...Shoots OK but as for cleaning it's worthless. In fact I would say that its as or even more corrosive than Black Powder. You have to remember just because Jim Shokey said this is the best powder he has ever used he gets paid to say that.Hell he switching from Knight rifles after all these years to Thompson and I'll bet he is getting lots of $$$$ for the deal. The same goes for all the crap that they try to sell us hunters half of the stuff is worthless, doe urine for $50 a ounce ....give me a break.
Thats all !

If anyone wants to try it, send me like $10, and I will ship basically a full can of it to you (only used 300 grains)... Send me a PM if you're interested.
