Another new cam

Ok, I stumbled across the DLC Covert II. It is the Scout Guard SG550 guts in a WEATHERPROOF case and it has a couple LED's added for better illumination. I guess the sensor has a wider field of view than the camera, so some people are complaining about this. I kind of see it as a benefit for those times when you want to set a cam perpendicular to a trail (and close). It should trigger quick enough to get the shot. Another trick for this that was shared on a forum is to set it to a 3 pic burst mode and then you will get the shot no problem.

I picked one up for only $5 more than I paid for my SG550. I'll let you know how I like it after it comes and I've had a time to test it. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Look forward to the review. Almost seems like the wider FOV might be highly advantageous for doing short video clips on a true trailcam type setup where they're typically moving through from side to side instead of hanging around to pose.

Does the Covert II mount to the tree by using an included strap? I couldn't find an answer on the website.

Fifield Seed n Feed is giving a discount to members on another forum. That's how it got down to being just $5 more than what I paid for the SG550. I think they normally sell them for $229.

Well, it came in the mail yesterday.

Cute lil' sucker!

It comes with a nice long strap. It is not really set up for a python cable. Programs just like the SG550 (which is no surprise since it is a SG550 in a case). I'll get it in the field tomorrow.

Yup, Pelican like, two clasps on the right side and padlock ready /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif between them. Why bother with the padlock? I doubt people are going to open a cam to steal the card when they could walk off with the whole cam.

I was surprised to see Scheels is carrying them. They want $249 for one though. Man, they're high on a lot of their stuff.

My friends at WHITETAIL ARCHERY in Agency, IA are hyping this one up and they are selling for some great deals, if the reviews are good, I'll be stopping in at W.A. and picking some up- sounds like a better deal if you get 2 of them in a pkg. Look forward to hearing more!!!

I was asked about how the images compare between the SG550 and the DLC Covert II. Both cams spent time on the same tree (though never at the same time). I tried to choose pics with deer at about the same distance (the farther deer in the DLC image is to the left). Maybe not the best images to compare (slightly different angle on the tree) but I was in a hurry. I'll let you be the judge of the pics.

These cams are built around a CMOS sensor. I noticed that they have a "pixelated" quality to them when the images are enlarged. I'm not saying that is a bad thing since I'm loving the battery life on both and the price is right (IMO).

The SG550 got sent back last Friday (after two months in the field). It was trying to use the same IR settings (with or without filter, I'm not sure which) for the daytime pics and thus all the daytime images were way over exposed. I should be getting it's replacement soon.

I figured I'd update this thread, due to a little event from this past weekend.

I took the "remote controller" into the field with me to check battery level on my SG550 and my DLC Covert last Saturday. I placed 8 new Energizer Lithium AA's in them when I put them out. I think I put the SG550 out January 5, 2009 and the DLC Covert went out Feb 14th. The batteries were dead in the DLC Covert on Saturday and there were no images on the card, so I'm guessing the batteries died somewhere around June 13, the last card pull.

Fairly decent battery life if you ask me, though it brings up some questions. The SG550 is still going strong, so did I get some bad batteries for the DLC? Or is the DLC, with it's additional IR LED and different PIR sensor a little harder on batteries? The SG550 was out in more cold weather, and consistently had more pics on it's card due to where I had it placed. Not sure whether this is even worth worrying about, just throwing it out there.

When I ran to town to get batteries, the store didn't have Lithiums so I bought Energizer alkalines. I'll see what kind of life I get out of 8 of those, but it won't be able to be compared to anything else.

I'm thinking about picking up a Bushnell Trophy Cam, so that will add another variable to the testing. :D
