Any good afternoon hunt stories?

I've been getting my arse kicked the past 4 days and tonight is my last night to close the deal since my season ends today....I've never been a big fan of afternoon turkey hunts but last night at 5:00 I had 2 toms and 4 hens 200 yards from my house when I got home from work /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif...this morning they didn't make a sound so I'm going back out and will be set up by 3:30 or 4 hoping they follow the same routine as yesterday. I need some afternoon hunt motivation stories.....who's got one?

I love hunting the afternoon. "Most" of the time, gobblers are by themselves, and are looking for a girl friend to roast with. All the birds I have killed in Iowa have been afternoon or evening.

Is that what they are calling it these days???? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I went out for an afternoon hunt last week. I figure I'd cut them off on the way to the roost. I had to jump a small creek to get to where I wanted to go. Once on the other side, I spied a flock of turkeys already where I wanted to set up. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Take home message, get there early.

My buddy talked me into going without a decoy last night. That was dumb. Had one called to 80 yards, and would not come any closer since there was no decoy out. That was at about 6:30 last night. Take home message...take a decoy.

I love hunting in the afternoon... Those morning hunts can be fun but I hate getting up early and I'm always worried about getting set up without roosting birds. Link is to my last afternoon story.

Afternoon success

Afternoon hunting is the best, just after noon...in my experience birds are more cooperative between 11 and 2 than they are between 4 and 8. I haven't had much success in late afternoon hunts.

Hope you're doing well as I type though. As Mr. Obvious says, "the key to turkey hunting is knowing where they is and where they isn't. You have to position yourself between where they is and where they's goin." /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Sure wish I was out there right now and not here at work on this computer.

Love the afternoon and early evening! Set up near the roost site and they'll be back most of the time. I get there early afternoon though.

i called a gobbler and 3 hens in this afternoon, well actually i just cut off their feeding route. no shot, too thick.

The birds this time of year here dont gobble much until they fly up, so u just gotta listen. The hens though will yelp ur head off lol.

Thanks for the stories guys...my last chance effort was a bust. It was WINDY as hell here /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif so I moved my blind from where it was to another farm a couple miles away where I could get tucked into a hidden corn field out of the wind where I've seen them feed in the evenings. Got there at 4 - already hens in the field - /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif I moved a little ways further down than what I wanted to. Sat there until 8:45 last night..had one tom gobble 3 times at 7:30 after a little calling session and I thought I was going to seal the deal in the bottom of the 9th....no dice. A bunch of hens were making quite a ruckus in there with him so he had no reason to come out and check out the lonesome hen in the field.

At 8:15 there was a bunch of grass crunching behind me and I thought I was really going to pull it off....it's getting louder, my heart is pounding out of my chest, the gun is out the blind window ready to bark fire....waiting, waiting, AAAAGH!!!! Damn deer!!!!!! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

It was a good season, I put 2 friends on birds that I could have smoked had I had the tag but I had 2 legitmate chances during the past 5 days, one that my partner totally jacked up on Sunday, and one that I completely jacked up on Monday when I tried to get too close to one on the roost - ooops. Saturday was a bust because of the winter blizzard, and the past 2 days were just slow.

The wife still has a tag for May, maybe I'll convince her to get a babysitter for the little man and we'll give it another shot.
