anyone interested......?

BDAHMS

Be here Now
I am really interested and wanting to do a DIY hunt in 2015 for a mule deer or elk out west in either Montana, Idaho, Colorado, a Dakota, western Nebraska, that area................anyone interested in this as well? I plan to have a friend or two along with me but thought I would open this up to someone who has maybe done this before and could offer incite and or someone who has always wanted to do this but didn't want to alone. Maybe fall of 2015 so that leaves PLENTY of time to plan it all out.............. would also be willing to trade some tree stand time on my properties for someone who has land out west as well. I have plenty of 160" + deer around- just an idea there as well

Those are probably easier states to get over-the-counter tags or get drawn for non-trophy unit tags, but you should look into New Mexico and Arizona. Big bulls in those two states and plenty of room to DIY.

Lot's of room in New Mexico. I went twice. Second time I came home with a 320" 6x6. Absolutely LOVE elk hunting! I was with a guide but we were on public land. Santa Fe National Forest. Never saw another hunter either. It is tough to draw though. I got lucky and drew in 2007 and 2009. Tag was $535 and worth every penny. I think it was zone 6A. Great hunt. My wife wants to go but I doubt we would ever both draw a tag in the same year. I wonder if I can call for her without a tag of my own?

I'm interested. What weapon/season were you thinking of? I'd be down for any bow/rifle/muzzy

BDAHMS, if you come to Arizona, you can't bring him! ;)

Just kidding, buddy!

Deer Nut, yes you can call for your wife without your own tag.

I'll be applying for 2014 NR archery Elk soon for the following states: Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico and Kentucky.:drink1:

Yes, they will call it for 10 years, milking me for a preference point and the cost of a NR license each year. No thanks. ;)

I know a couple of units you can probably get drawn in way less than 10 years even with archery. Don't be a hater, Randy!

I am not looking at 2014- I will be looking at fall of 2015 so I can have all my ducks in a row and no issues on knowing everything I need for the trip etc- as far as gun or archery- I don't have any issue with either. was looking at rifle for my first time and then go to archery after that

I'd recommend you buy preference points in 2014. Most states let you do that without applying for a tag. Start researching that now since most applications periods open in January and close fairly quickly (it seems).
