Got my tiller runin today anticipating preparing ground for end of July Brassica . But,may be first time ever it could be too wet. I know alot can change by the end of the month but my clay is slow to dry out.

If it stays wet I will be nuking some ground and broadcasting some seed. Not ideal but you will have plenty come up. Better than nothing. I already have nuked one patch that is a half acre. Will be spraying again in 2 weeks before I start throwing. This is on clover so I will have some nitrogen to work with.

I had a field last year that was pretty over grown and I just ran out of time to prep it ahead of time...so I broadcast brassica into the standing weeds, some of which were 5' tall, and then mowed it. My thinking was that I would get more seed to hit the ground broadcasting into standing weeds than I would if I mowed it first and then had the seed getting stopped by the mat of dead weeds.

Seeding first and then mowing worked out pretty well. Brassicas are small enough seeds that you can get some decent germination without tilling. Yes, there are better ways...but broadcasting it onto unworked soil can work fairly well.

It can work. I broadcast some into some hammered soybeans last July (around the 15th) and they came in better than I expected.

Most important I think is gettin seed down before a good rain. So far this summer reminds me of 2013. Was wet up until July. Then turned cool and dry with big Heat out West same as now. Then in Aug heat moved over us for Hot and dry. I had heck of a time getting anything to germinate that year so ya never know?

Went down on a recon/mowing mission this weekend. There has been so much rain this year in one particular spot that I was getting the ATV stuck in the mud just trying to access the plots (which by the looks of it have been under water for a while). If it ever does dry out, I'll be planting in sand again. Weeds were about 5 -6ft tall in most places. Burned up two belts and gave up for the time being. I got a lot of work to do in a short time if I'm going to get these plots in.

We were up to 5.5 inches at 9 am this morning.. I'm sure we are over the 6 inch mark for just today now.
