I am planting a few apple trees out on the land i hunt. What kind of apple tree should I plant and when should I plant them?
 
Stay away from any green/tart apples. From my experience, green ones have always been left alone til red ones are gone. Not sure on names tho...
 
I planted 10 apple trees the first yr i bought my place, 5 different varieties. You need to find varieties that will cross pollinate with eachother. I made it so that i will haveapples ripening from late july all the way through october just by paying attention to their bloom/pollinatimg dates and ripening dates. the varieties i have off the top of my head are Honeycrisp, Jonathans, Mcintosh, Grannysmith and i think Zestar
 
Make sure to put something around your trees to protect them. Nothing like working hard to keep your young trees healthy, only to have them rubbed by a buck or accidentally mowed over or something.
