are mountain lions legal targets?

here in Iowa there have been many reports, and proof of mountain lions in the state. Are there laws against shooting one if ever given the opportunity? I know they are very rare. I'm just trying to inform friends at work who believe it is illegal to shoot it. Who's right?

I talked to a CO at the state fair and she said that there are no laws protecting them so they are fair game.

When she told me that my wife told me that my smile lit that room.On one of the properties I hunt the owner said that he has had one on his land within view almost every week.It has killed quite a few chickens and geese and has razzed his horses and cattle. He told me and his nephew if we get a shot take it.I would probably take pics before I slung an arrow at em but I definitely would shoot.

...be sure of your target!...there are a lot of bobcats around these days and they are highly protected - as of right now...eating chickens and geese sounds more like a bobcat to me than a mtn lion...remember these lions are huge and common prey for them are large mammals, especially deer...they do however seem to have a sweet tooth for house cats (one of their benefits!)...

He has seen the cat several times in the past couple of months and he said that it was about 2 1/2 at the shoulder and 6 ft. long.and greyish brown with no stripes. He is definitely a big cat.
The pics will be for my kids to take to school but believe me I get a clean shot,He is gonna get the smack laid on him.

I heard they like to feed on big animals. Especially camoflauged ones walking quietly in the early morning dark...........

why is that? i didn't know that horrible judgement in archery equipment made you hoyters taste like crap. STILL not enough to get me to buy one

You know, as many people as there are in the state of Iowa that say they've seen Mountain Lions on their property, isn't it kind of funny that there are never any pictures of them. Maybe I just haven't seen them yet, but as many trail-cams as there are set up by hunters on this site, you'd think we'd have come across one cat by now.

Did'nt the picture alaskan provided of a huge griz chasing a ground squirrel put a damper on the idea lions feed on large things only.

Something like....."Hey there fuzzy little buddy, care for a ride on my back while we meander on down to the berry bushes?"

I have a jobsite thats 4 miles or so south of the Iowa line and in the last 3 months between me my uncle and dad we've seen a 5 foot black kitty and several of the locals claim to have seen them I have been aiming to take my camera up there and set it up. I sure won't pass up a chance on him if I get it.

lions and tigers and bears ... oh my ... it's amazing what a growing bobcat population and a few young male transient lion kills can do to the average Iowan's imagination.

Like CRITRGTR points out, it's amazing our all male lion population survives the web of trail cams out there and the two weeks of huge shotgun deer drives. And now we are even seeing the extremely rare black panther in Iowa.

Come on guys, isn't it exciting enough that we live in a state that has incredible, and realistic, potential to grow world record whitetails.
