Are you a deer hunter?

Are you a deer hunter? Probably a stupid question to ask on this website because I would guess nearly all of you are deer hunters.

Are you tired of shooting yearling bucks? Better yet, are you tired of passing up yearling bucks that are killed by your neighbor or another person with hunting rights to the same land you hunt?

Back in the late 1980's I made the conscious choice to stop shooting yearling bucks & I have not killed one in Iowa since.

Also about that same time I decided I wanted to only harvest bucks that were mature. I was tired of killing little basket-racked yearling bucks & I made my own choice to let these bucks walk in the future. I upgraded my standards to only bucks that I thought were mature.

Obviously, this is a personal choice. There are as many reasons for continuing to kill yearling bucks as there are hunters shooting them. However, more & more hunters today are electing to pass up yearling bucks in the hopes of getting the opportunity to harvest an older buck.

If you are in this category you have several choices. First, if you own the land you hunt, you can simply institute a rule that no more yearling bucks are killed. If however, you don't own the land you hunt, the next best choice is to try to get together with your neighbors & the other hunters that have access to your property to try to form a QDM cooperative where all of you agree to a new set of guidelines. This idea has worked well in many places like Iowa where average property sizes are small and I suggest this as the first option to consider.

However, if your neighbors disagree with the idea of passing up yearling bucks that is their perogative, but fortunately, today you have other choices. Such as...

(3) Lease the land you hunt as well as neighboring land and install a "don't shoot yearling bucks" policy.

(4) Hunt somewhere else where there is a QDM cooperative or a landowner/hunter with the same beliefs as you.
