I am posting this for a co worker, he recently bought some land and is looking to do a few smaller food plots with his ATV. Anybody have any experience with ATV equipment for plots? Companies to look for or stay away from?
I bought this disc after trying to pull around heavy discs with my smaller ATV. The think really cuts but is not as wide as a pull behind. But you can back up with it on which is a bonus on small plots.
I have had really good luck with the Tarter Terrain Tough Disc/Cultipacker combo. I pull it behind a Polaris Sportsman 450 and it does really well. Last year I used it to till up a 2 acre grass field (after killing it off with round up) and it did an outstanding job. Unlike many tow behind ATV discs, it is actually heavy enough to cut into the soil and turn it over. http://www.basspro.com/Tarter-Terrain-Tough-Disc/CultiPacker/product/90349/
I also have a Swisher trial cutter mower. I have used it to mow my clover plots as well as cut ATV trails through thick patches of undergrowth in the woods and it has done a respectable job (just don't expect a finish mower, although I believe swisher sells those as well).
I would suggest to stay away from tow behind spreaders. They are great for spreading fertilizer on smooth lawns, but I have had nothing but troubles with them while spreading lime/fertilizer in food plots.
I bought a new drag harrow and an attached ATV spreader this year, but since I haven't used them yet, I don't have anything good or bad to say about them.
My Christmas this year consisted of the (nearly) complete line of Kolpin Dirtworks accessories for food plots. It is pretty pricey to get started but the online reviews are excellent. Unfortunately, the ground has been a little too frozen for me to get started on the food plot , so I can't yet give you a review.
Once you lock out the rear independent suspension and get the three point hitch system, you can get any number of implements, including the disc. I really like the fact that you use the weight of the ATV to force the disc blades down. I also have the landscape rake, the cultivator and the box blade. I'm planning to make my own cultipacker to go along with the system.
