Bachelor groups

I went out Saturday evening in hopes of seeing some rutting action. I hunted the previous weekend and did not see anything that told me that the rut was close. On Sat. I saw a total of 5 bucks (a pair and then a group of 3). Don't you think the bucks should be broken up by now? It left me a little confused. In years past I have not seen bachelor groups this late in October. What kind of sign is this?

I think it may just depend on where you are hunting. On Saturday morning I hunted in southern Iowa, i saw a total of 4 different bucks, and two of the four were chasing does at different times throughout the morning. However just tonight, i got some trail cam pics developed by my house which is in Central Iowa, and I got a picture with 3 bucks in it. That's why I think it just depends on where you are hunting right now. I bet those bucks won't be together though in a week or two.

Saturday evening we saw a forkie chasing 3 different does all over creation. Twenty minutes later two basket racks came out on a trail together and walked to within 25 yards of the same group of deer.
We decided it was pre-pre-rut!

I have seen alot of small buck chasing does since the middle of last week. They are definatly getting ready.

I agree Bowbendr! Looks like we live and hunt the same area. I live in NH also. On Sunday and finally started to see some sign. Usualy by this time of year in our area we see plenty of sign. I always take the first week of Nov off to hunt the "chase." Looks like it will be a bit later this year. We need some cold weather to get things started!

The bucks where I hunt down here in Southern Iowa are still hanging out together too. While they are doing their fair share of sparing and territorial marking, they still continue to hang out together. I haven't saw much in the way of actual ut type signs yet, but I am waiting!

I have been seeing small bucks chasing does here in Minnesota for about 2 weeks.

I saw some chasing action by the little guys a week or 2 ago but last night 2 BIG bucks crossed the road in front of me together. It was a full moon and they really stood out in the snow in the ditch. I'm not sure where they were heading but they were going there together.
