ballistic info?

Basically looking for bullet drop info for my savage tactical .223 shooting black-hills 60g. vmax bullets at 3150fps out of a 24" 1-in-9 twist ratio barrel. Can anyone help?

Try Varminthunters.com. Go to their message board. You'll have to register to post, but those guys know that stuff off the top of their head, and if they don't they will set up a link for you.

Off the top of my head, I'd have to say 100 yds would be +.09 200 yds would be 0 300 yds would be around -2 inches 400 yds around -6 and 500 yds around -9. This is just an uneducated guess based on what I'm trying to figure out with the same barrel set up as you but using 50 grain Vmax black hills reman ammo. Try the web site, they can tell you for sure.

If you have the same barrel with a 1in9 twist than dont even bother with the 50g. vmax there not big enough and dont group for crap. Everyone ive talked to says with that fast of a twist you should shoot atleast 55-70g.bullets i usually shoot 68g. boattail hp molycoated and they group about dime size or less 10 shots at 100yds and when i tried the 50g. vmax it went to a half dollar size group. Huge difference at longer ranges also.

Here is a link that may help!

I wanted to use 40 grain Vmax but had a hard time finding them so I went with a 50 grainer. I don't have enough experience yet to know what this gun likes to shoot. I know I've read both ways on the light VS heavy bullet in a 24in 1/9. There are folks out there who claim 35 grain is the way to go. I take into consideration what I'm shooting at and are dime size groups that necessay? Who wouldn't love to be able to do that? 'Specially free hand. I also take into consideration what is down range of what I'm shooting at. I figure a heavier bullet will keep alot of its energy and possibly shape, after it hits the ground where as a lighter bullet will lose its energy faster and more than likely disintegate when it hits the ground causing less ricochets.

Like I say though, I've got alot of range time ahead of me to figure out what this gun likes.

Just by looking at the side of a Hornady box, 40gr, V-MAX Molycoated with a muzzle velocity of 3800 are +.8 at 100, 0 at 200, -5.3 at 300, -16.5 at 400 and -36.00 at 500. From that I assume I was wayyy off on the other ones.

I have a book called Hunter's Guide to Ballistic's. It does not list the 60gr Vmax bullet, but it list a Hornady 60gr soft point. The ballistics on this bullet are with a 200yd zero. 100yd is
+1.6, 300yd is -7.5 and 400yd is -22.5.
I don't know how this bullet compares with the V-Max but it travels @ 3150fps also. Hope this helps.
