During the rut...I guess you have to stay on your toes. I decided to hunt on the ground tonight and didn't see anything 'till the last few minutes of shooting light. A doe came busting out and I figured by the way she was moving a buck wasn't far behind. I was right, a heavy 8 pt. was following and stopped broadside at 25 yds. I could see the buck fine but when I drew back, I couldn't see well enough through my peep. I decided to give him a quick grunt and see if I could draw him closer. Well I got what I wished for...He came on a dead run right at me sitting on the ground. I'm glad his hearing didn't pin point my grunt exactly because he flew by me about 5 yrds to the left of where I was sitting looking for a fight. I guess you need to be careful what you wish for during the rut, and stay nimble if your sitting on the ground.

I was only able to get out once this weekend, but it was exciting. Shortly after getting into my stand, I rattled in a good looking 10 pointer that hung up 10 yards behind me. I hunted til almost dark, then got down to find a bit better location for my stand. When I stepped out into a beanfield, I saw another buck working the edge of the timber at a fast pace. I dropped down behind a skimpy patch of foxtail grass, and waited. He spotted me at about 100 yards, and ran towards me, stopping at about 60 and again at 40 yards. Then he came in on a hard run, so I rose up on my knees, and drew back. He froze, and I hoped for a broadside chance, but it didn't happen. He ran back about 50 yards, then just moseyed off into the trees. I don't think he was being aggressive - it was getting dark, and I think he was hoping for a little doe action. Gosh, the mental picture of that one makes me a bit nervous. Anyway, it was a bit exciting, and a bit scary.
