Becoming a resident...

walmart

It states 90 days on DNR website....has an application asking for everything under the sun, can you take that to walmart or just your drivers license....I just dont want any hickups in the process...

Ill let someone who actually knows fill in the blanks for you. When your a resident its easy.

It's 90 days and the dnr now has a checklist of items they must see before your status changes to resident. The items are lease agreement/home purchase, drivers license, proof of employment ect...,

They have made it a little harder to fool the system.

My cousin just went thru the process. I think he had to fax all that info to dnr office.

I filled it all out....just didn't know if I really needed to go that route or could go to Walmart

If you go the Walmart, convenience store route...be prepared to show the licensing agent utility bills, driver's license, etc. They will be on the phone with the DNR providing this data.

It really depends on whether or not you've ever purchased anything as a NR. For example, have you ever been in the IADNR "system" at all. If not, you just need a DL with at least 90 days. If you have been in the system as a NR in the past, you have to fill out the sheet online and get it to the dnr early.

I just moved here as a student and had to do the paperwork. My wife has never been in the system and she can just go down and get one after 90 days. I've dealt with Mark Warren concerning all my questions at the dnr and he's been great.

I actually just got a call from the DNR this morning approving my residency change. First, get your Iowa Driver's License. After 90 days, you have to submit a whole bunch of paperwork. It includes driver's license, lease or homeowners agreement, proof of employment in Iowa, whether you've filed for a homestead tax exemption/or anyone in your immediate family, copy of your utilities bill and all vehicle registrations of you and immediate family, whether registered in Iowa or not.

You have to have a majority of these items and for every one you don't, a written explanation is necessary. You have to send this all to the DNR the first time, I'm 99% sure you can't just go to Wal Mart. Send this packet down to Des Moines. If you fax it in, you have to submit the actual copies via mail as well too. I mailed mine last Wednesday and got my approval via phone call this morning around 830am.

Btw, if I were anyone I would only speak with Mark Warren. My buddy called a while ago and got some bad information. Luckily I knew they were wrong and got him in touch with Mark. He had his account created that day and my buddy was able to buy tags the very next day. If I were you, I'd get in touch with Mark.

Just wanted to mention (Im going through this process right now) that you can submit all the paperwork and everything prior to living in the state for 90 days, and they basically "pre-approve" you, and then once you hit 90 days (from the earliest date on the forms submitted), you will receive a phone call to let you know that you are good to go.

Example - I moved into my least Aug 1st, but didnt get a drivers license, vehicle registration, etc until say August 20th. Once I have everything that they require, I can send all my paperwork in (Sept 15th), and I will be pre-approved and can hunt Nov 1st.

You have to provide proof of employment to be a resident in Iowa? What if you work in several states or are retired?

All I did was go to the court house to buy my hunting license and showed them my driver's license. That easy

Read the Iowa DNR pamphlet
A person is not considered a resident under this
paragraph if the person is residing in the state only
for a special or temporary purpose including but
not limited to engaging in hunting, fishing or trapping.
2. Is a full-time student at an accredited educational
institution in Iowa and reside in Iowa while
attending the educational institution, or are a fulltime
student under 25 years of age at an accredited
educational institution outside the state as long as
at least one parent or legal guardian maintains a
principal and primary residence in Iowa.
3. Is a student who qualifies as a resident pursuant
to the above paragraph only for the purpose of
purchasing any resident license specified in sec.
483A.1 or 484A.2
4. Is a nonresident under 18 years of age with a
parent who is a legal resident of Iowa.
5. Is a member of the armed forces of the
United States who is serving on active duty, claims
residency in this state, and has filed a state individual
income tax return for the preceding year, or
is stationed in this state.
Dual Residency Not Permitted: Unless you
qualify under 2, 3, 4 or 5 in the previous paragraph,
a person shall not purchase or apply for
any resident license or permit if that person has
claimed residency in any other state or country.
An Iowa resident Hunting License will be
invalid if you:
a) Obtain the license under false pretenses. Providing
false information on a deer or wild turkey
hunting license invalidates that license and transportation
tag and all other deer or turkey licenses/
tags obtained during the same year.
b) Do anything that would forfeit your eligibility
for a resident license after the license is
obtained, such as moving out of Iowa or purchasing
a resident hunting privilege in another state or
country.

So I sent everything in.....my car registration is still Ohio but it says on application for residency to send it in regardless of state.....so I call today and the lady says I must get my car registered in Iowa or I cant get a license....What a crock, what does my car have to do with it, I sent paystub, drivers license, house contract, utility bill....any advice

Well by state law you have 30 days to get your vehicle registered after you move. I think Ohio will refund your registration if there is still time before it expires. I guess you've gotta be committed.
