Best bow for the buck, and $$$?

So, a guy at work is showing some interest in taking up bowhunting and 3-D's. I've been out of the loop as far as compounds go. I'm thinking he will not want to spend a lot of dollars. Any of these new compounds that range in the $300.00 area you guys would recommend being the best for the $$$?

RBB,
You should be able to get a good used Mathews or Hoyt for around $300 - $400. Mathews Legacy or Hoyt Razor tec would be my suggestion.

I think we are all going to be a little biased on this one, but the used Matthews and Hoyt 2002 or 2003 should be in that range. Also, I just got a new bow, PSE Firestorm Lite for a good price, it is a short bow 30" axle to axle with a 8" brace height and I love it becaue it weights only 3lbs.

I would recommend getting a used bow as well. My 2002 Hoyt Ultratec is an awesome bow IMO. I see them listed on Archerytalk for $300 and nobody is buying them. A bow’s value drops significantly as soon as you walk out the pro shop door.

If he wants a brand new bow have him look at the Reflex line or the low end Hoyts. The low end Hoyt’s have a Magnesium riser instead of machined aluminum.

Mike you can get a new Reflex compound made by Hoyt Brand new with all the factory warrenties for $300. A lot of shops will through in some acceessories and arrows for another $50 usually. Pretty good deal for a new bow all setup.

RBB,
I have been getting ready to list my bow and you can have first crack at it if it fits you. It's a 2001 single cam; camo Hoyt Ultratec, draw length adj. 29.5-33", 70-80 Lbs., 10 venture 300 carbon arrows, Stabilizer doinker black 6", wrist strap camo braided, silencers, hoyt six arrow quick detach quiver, PSE RS Flo pin sight, everything is in very good condition. I will include a NAP drop away rest if I can find it. Bow shoots great only selling because I want a new bow for a bear and moose hunt coming soon. Shipped to door $300.

If he would decide to go with a used bow, what would you guys be looking for as far as common wear and tear. Any special considerations on the split limbs? How do the Hoyts hold up over a few years? Common problems? Any high end used bows you'd recommend staying away from?

I know this is a Matthews/Hoyt site, but many people that shoot Parkers swear by them, and you can get one set up for $300 new not a bad deal!

I agree with the Parker advice as well.
