Best Outdoor Mobile Phone Applications

Being a huge gadget geek and living in the technology industry, I've compiled a few useful apps on my mobile devices (mainly Apple products) for outdoor activities...I assume most are available on Andriod devices as well. (Caveat - Technology is great as I'm sitting in my basement counting down the days, but I often hunt to leave it all behind!)

Here are some of my favorites:
  • Iowa Whitetail - duh
  • Google Earth - Free, great for top down satellite views
  • Primos Wind Checker - newest app, pretty accurate so far.
  • Planimeter - great for determining acerage, sq. mileage, etc. off of satelitte mapping
  • iSolunar - If you believe in the moon phase stuff, this one is pretty solid. Let's you look day-by-day or month-by-month. Also has weather plugin and journal capability so you can model your success by predecition
  • TimeToHunt - Another Solunar tool but not as solid as iSolunar
  • Cabelas Hunt - by Trimble...one of my favorites. Pretty solid GPS functionality (waypoints, etc.), Ballastic Info by bullet manu. & type, blood trailing tool (site of shot, blood drops, etc. overlayed on a satellite image), compass, trip computer, gear list that can be saved, satellite map like Google Earth, moon & sun info and lastly a weather app.
  • Sportsman Channel - hunting & fishing videos & show guide
  • My-Cast - Weather app that has great live radar maps
If you like to fly fish, there are tons of great apps for that as well (Orvis, Trout Stream GPS, The Hatch, etc.).

What else do you all use?

I'm an android user and here are my favorites

Google Earth
SunMoon
ScoreMyRack
Cribbage Pro ( for those all day sits when my A.D.D. sets in)

Scout Look weather has an app that I haven't bought but you can book mark their page for excellent information on wind direction, moon phase, barometric pressure, etc all on one page.

big fan of the clinometer app on my blackberry! Takes all the guesswork out of the moment of truth.

Good deal! :) Wasn't there a thread like this a few months back? I'm going to have to download a lot of apps in the next few weeks. I have a feeling that this phone is going to make my blackberry look like something from the stoneage.

Not really an outdoor app but one I use to pass time when I'm waiting like sitting on stand. I was never really a book reader until my smart phone. I use the Kindle app. more and more books are cheap and there are tons of free ones reading a free one right now called "In Africa Hunting Adventures In The Big Game Country". Already started loading up on books for November.

sureshot, there are a pile of good apps for the android, that's what I have. the IW app is being fixed from last time i talked to OneCam

Kindle was a factoy loaded app on my droid x. I didnt check the market but would guess it would be they want to sell the books.

Sent from my DROIDX using IW

I like Shooting Hours by Huntgeek. It will vibrate your phone when your shooting hours start or end. Works great for turkey season too.

I need to find a good gps/topo mapthats free to plot waypoints and such like a regular hand held gps for the times that I don't take the gps or think I didn't need it and stumble upon something worth marking

I love the ScoutLook Weather APP! I use it on my droid, believe they have an iPhone version as well. Accurate weather info and some cool features like the ScentCone and wind mapping options.

Tractorhouse is another great time killing treestand app. You can search for tractors or implements based on your custom filters.

I got time to hunt and a spread sheet to help me remember the deer I see and in which stand. I have yet to completely figure out time to hunt.

For droid I have.

Compass- works awesome.
sundroid
radar now
latitude
the weather channel
weatherbug
accuweather
flash light
score my rack
tune in radio

I never have the chance to use my iPod! I might miss something. For instence I was laying back for 5mins and a Doe walks out 50 yards ahead of me and I don't see her until about 30 yards. I can't afford to miss a second otherwise I might miss a deer. I sure like using fruit ninja and zombie duck hunt though.
