ever had.Got my first turkey [jake]this year. Also went mushroom hunting for first time found over 7 pounds.
Got my jake 2nd season.I was hunting with my nephew, his first year turkey hunting,my second year [i was the quide] thats kinda funny. We setup late Fri. afternoon in an area we always see birds. Was all settled in 5:30 Sat.morning Started hearing birds at first light from 4-5 different birds at 150yds.All we had to do was wait! This was the day they flew down the other direction, sat for 5 hours never seen a bird.
Time for a nap so i drove 45 min. home.I went out about 4:00 to setup on a roosting area and check it out.Did'nt have any decoys or calls thay were all 40 miles north!!!! Picked a spot and all settled in by 5:00.They start showing up 6:30 10-12 hens and a couple struters 200yds away. Then 6 come out 150yds south of me Jakes, they look around see the hens and sprint by at 40yds to check out the hens spent an hour watching them work my way.Watched the hens and some jake roost up in the trees 20yds away, the 6 jakes sprint back by at 40yds again and go back in the same spot they come out! Now i got a plan!!!!
Back up Sun. morning to hunt with nephew. He had moved the blind and decoys for his evening hunt Sat.nite.He had us setup on a ridge between two fingers of trees.Good spot.Had them goobling again at first light.Finaly seen a head after about an hour then 3 heads all toms,60yds out and won't move in!! My pretty boy and girl and couple other hens are starting to feel bad!!They go over the crest of hill out of sight.I get out the box call and do a couple of purrs. Heads pop up on our left couple more purrs and they come in slow! Are they close enough yet? Closer, are they close enough yet?? NO!! They turn around and leave!!!2 hours Later decide to pack it in.Look thing over and step off the distance on the 3 toms that came in. 15 YARDS!!!!!!low light and looking thru the mesh on DB made it look farther away.FEELING REAL BAD---grab a hen decoy and head home for nap.
Take my hen decoy a couple of jakes and head for my roost area.
Setup in old down tree 50 yds up tree line from last nite. Same show as nite before hens out in field and 6 jakes come out the same place and sprint to the hens, but they did slow down and look at my setup. Got hens coming in around me,then i look south here comes the big tom walks up 20 away and i MISS!!! Must have pointed instead of aiming!!Needless to say he's gone but the hens are still around and the jakes. The jakes are headed back to their spot walking by at 40yds again. The wind is blowing about 20-30 mph so when they are in line with the wind i let out a couple purrs and they start to come in i got 4 jakes and getting closer at 20yds.They walk by my hen decoy looking for the hen in the weeds purring. At 10yds the first jake is missing a head.

My nephew got his bird Sun.nite too.He spotted them three toms in a hay field that nite strutting before they roosted .He belly crawled up a hill 40 yds to the crest of the hill looked over and they were 10yds away, with their backs to him,he got up on his knees ready to shoot and made a cluck sound and when they turned around.

4th season i went out to same spot that had the 6 sprinting jakes.
