Big Bear and Story

READ THE STORY BELOW BEFORE YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURES!

The following pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer Hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild). Based on the contents of the bear's stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. His last meal was an unlucky nature buff. The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker. Think about this - If you are an average size man: You would be level with the bear's belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two-story house, look in the bedroom windows and eat your wife. And yet an additional perspective to consider is this was one big son-of-a-bitch.

heh heh...

I saw those exact pictures about 2 or 3 years ago when they were making the internet rounds, seems they're at it again! Still a big bear.

I was afaid the pictures of the hiker would be there again. Those where to much to look at. After I received them I deleted them and did not forward them to any one. Extreemly hard to look at and somebody son to boot. I did not think they needed shown.

I think I know the pictures your talkin about Ironwood. TRhats a risk you take.. After this story and pics have been around for a few years I'm surprised its not 15 foot tall looking into second story windows......

Medicsnoke...where did you get that story? I'm not trying to be a smartass here, but not one line of it is true. 12 foot 6 at the shoulder!!! 14 foot high? Put on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the hazards of the Alaska wilderness! What???!!! This bear story is unbelievable. It has made its way all around the world so many times and not one of the stories is true. This bear was taken on Hitchenbrook Island of Alaska in 2001. Please read the following link for FACTS about this bear. It did not kill any hikers, he is not a forest service worker, etc. etc. It was all a fabrication as a result of the internet. The link below tells the story from one of the hunters that was on that hunt and he tells the REAL story. There is also a link on the webpage that separates fact from fiction about the big bear.

Sorry...I've just seen this thing so many times with so many variations that it just annoys me! No offense to you medicsnoke. I'm sure you're only passing on what was passed to you.
At any rate, it is one hell of a bear!

Thanks shoot2kill. The largest grizzley bear has a 3 way tie and as for brown bear the largest was traken on Kodiak Island in 1952 by Roy Lindsley. This one is a bigb fairy tale. A bear to stand 14 feet is unheard of.

Shoot2Kill is correct. The bear in the photos (an Alaska brown rather than a grizzly) was taken by a hunter named Ted Winnen with a .338 Winchester Mag. The truthful version of the hunt story appeared on pages 28 and 29 of the Fall 2004 issue of "Fair Chase" (the journal of the Boone and Crockett Club).

Ted's bear was in the B&C 25th Awards Program this past July 2004, and the skull scored 28 14/16". Big, but not a world record.
