New #2 World record Black bear taken in Pa 2010 - A Beast!

bear1a.jpg

This bear was shot November 15th 2010 with a crossbow in northeastern Pennsylvania (Pike County). 875 pounds live weight and 744 dressed, #2 in the WORLD and a new PA State Record. He missed the world record by 4 pounds......
From the hunter's nephew:
"This bear has some really cool history, It was right in the area we shot him for the last 17 years or so. Also, It has been caught in NJ numerous times which means he isn't afraid to swim the Delaware River.
He was trying to mate with a female bear who was in a snare in NJ. The female was caught by the NJDEP for testing and the big boy was trying to get his groove on with her. They had to tranquilize him so he didn't injure the female. As you can see in the pics, he has a tattoo on his lip. He was 711 pounds last year when he was caught by the Game Commission...so he put on some weight since then. He has an AWESOME blaze on his chest.

I have never seen a bear with a "U-shaped" blaze...seen lots with diamond shaped ones though. Bear had 6" of fat on him.
The bear was shot a total of 9 times by 3 different hunters(crossbow and bow) before it died. They said arrows were only going 6" into it and kill shots were finally in the neck and head after it was treed.

This bear was "tame" and would eat out of the hands of several neighbors. One elderly gentleman had fed this bear for 17 years and it was a regular to several homes. Some folks even put their arms around this bear and posed for photos. Not really what I would want to shoot and claim as a state record bear. Too bad. Though no laws were broken, not really a true bear hunt in my opinion.

Does that sentence bother anyone else:(

It bothers me as well, could have possibly been done another way, or not shot at all?

I guess maybe I like to play Devil's advocate but then again I live in bear country.
A bear that has been fed or has gotten into food at human inhabitations will eventually become a problem bear. The whole 9 arrows things seems crazy to me but I'm in no position to judge what happened at the time as I was not there. I do know that a bear that has come to rely on humans for food can and WILL eventually be trouble. I personally think it was dispatched legally by a hunter and that is pretty much it in my books. I'd rather see a hunter put a tag on the beast than the DNR have to put a bunch of slugs in it because some kid it happened across in a backyard somewhere missed the memo on sharing snacks and became one his/herself.

From what I've read it was fed ILLEGALLY and truthfully, feeding bears for your own viewing pleasure is idiotic and a recipe for disaster.
