Binos, again

Christams is just around the corner, at least that what Madison Avenue wants you to think. I'm gonna start dropping hints for the wife about what I want for Christmas. You know, subtle hints like a wish list taped to the side of her lawn and leaf bag that she uses to pick up 5 cent deposit cans and bottles in the ditches. I figure if she picks up the pace a little she should have enough for the pair of 8.5X56 Nikon Monarchs I want. Most of you like the 8X42s. Anybody have any experience with the 8.5X56? The math says they should be quite a bit brighter than the 42s but they are gonna be bigger and heavier. I'm of the philosophy "go big or go home" and "better to have 'em and not need 'em than need 'em and not have 'em". In my search of this forum for "binoculars" there is only one reference and I think it was one guy (Certral Iowa?) that reccomended getting the biggest objective lens you can. I don't wanna go any higher mag than 8.5 so 56 is the biggest lens I can get. The other draw back to the 8.5X56 is the close focus distance is 33 feet and the 42s are 8 feet. Thats roughly 10 yards to 3 yards. In tree stand parlance, 10 yards is pretty close.

So whadaya think, 8.5X56 or 8X42? I think she has time to get the cans, that is if Muddy doesn't beat her to them.

Don't forget that Muddy's required community service time for his felony fish abuse conviction might give him an unfair advantage in the aluminum collection game.

Bonk,

I took a new pair of Nikon 10 X 56 to Colorado this year and really like them.

Yes, they are a bit on the bulky side and may be a bit over kill for an Iowa timber, but the field of view is awesome.

I know on my Leupold Olympic 8X42's it is well past shooting light and I can still see awesome. I can't even see ten feet in front of me with my eyes and with those I can still see good out to a 100 yards

The larger objectives should not only be brighter, they should be clearer as well. The larger the size of the objective lens, the greater the resolution ability, all other things being equal. Or at least that is what the extensive reviews on the bird watching sites tell me. Those bird watchers are pretty anal about their binoculars.
That said, I dont know that I would want to haul the extra weight around along with all my other junk for bowhunting. Seems like my pack already weighs 100 lbs.

This will keep you busy for a while

I just bought some 8x42 Nikon Monarchs. Side by side comparison to the Leupold's that I wanted showed me that the Nikon picked up more light. I prefered the size and weight of the 8x42 over the larger models and am very pleased with my choice in buying them.

I ended up ordering the 8.5X56 Monarchs from Cabellas. I even popped for the overnight shipping. I can't belive I waited this long to spend the money. I've spent way more than the cost of the binos on other do dads over the years that really didn't help my hunting as much as a good set of glass. I shoulda saved my money on the doo dads and bought the glass sooner. These are heavy, but the Crooked Horn straps make em fell like they aren't even there.

Only concern, complaint, I have are the eye piece covers. I need to find something that snaps over the eye piece to protect the lenses. The one that comes with the binos dosen't fit tight and they are set for one inter pupilary distance. I'd like soemthing similar to the objective covers that snap in and out and are hooked to the barrles.

I never mess with caps, seems they are on when I want to look and taking the time and extra motion to remove them just gives what I want to look at more time to see me or get away. Good glass is easy to clean without scratching, if I'm going through a particularly bad patch of something, I'll tuck them inside my coat.

Depends on how much I was conversing with my Maker's the night before. Some mornings my head, and therefore, my inter pupilary distance, seems huge.
