Blind placement

Would you set up decoys and a blind right out in the open, on a narrow ag field saddle between two timbers, hoping to lure toms from either one? The birds would need to travel ~100 yards across the field from either timber.

Or would you make a judgment call which timber should be better and set the blind along the edge of it (better blind concealment), possibly limiting yourself to one timber?

Slap it up out in the middle and put a flock of decoys out! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Have you seen them strutt out in the middle before?

A little scouting may be your answer...

Middle of the field brother. If there are going to be birds roosted where they can see the decoys I wouldn't throw them out or else not call, especially if you're in the strut zone.

Worked last year, pretty sure I'll be near the same place this year.

Put it right in the middle and split the difference, I find a bird will come into the open field much easier than to the timber edge. I have shot birds out of the DB way out in fields where birds strut a 1/4 mile from the nearest tree. Pop it up, sit tight and let them eat. My 2 cents

I agree..right out in the middle! Each bird is different and I have seen some more leary in fields vs edges but the more ground you can cover the better. Set up in the middle, a couple decoys and sit tight. Most of the birds I have killed ae 10-11 am but all I do is sit in strut zones and WAIT. My patience far exceeds my calling but seems to work while bowhunting!

Oh yeah! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

If they hang out there then I'd pack a lunch and not move from that location all day long.

If you eat as much as Muddy does, you will need 2 badlands to pack all your crap in! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Muddy is just trying to gain smympathy weight so his wife doesn't feel bad. I dunno Muddy, twins is a lot of Ho Hos. Might be easier just to drink lots of those high carb beers you like and eat a pound of two of lard every day.

food is what keeps muddy's attention while out in the blind all day. or the ADD kicks in....

I can't argue with that.

That is how we do it, no run and gun but the long days pay off usually! I've put the blinds in logging roads a few yards wide and had them walk right by at steps, still amazes me how they don't pay attention to them! Good luck!

One other benefit I've always thought might be valid about being out in the open like that is deer are more likely to start quietly shying away from a distance without spooking and blowing through the timber. Less likely to alert the turkeys of a predator in the midst. I have a real high deer population so I typically have more than one of these chance encounters if the blind is well hidden and they stumble across it. I regularly see deer and turkeys mingling together and I think to a certain degree at least they pay attention to the other's senses. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit but it sure seems like it at times.

Muddy, are you setting up in the morning or leaving the blind out overnight? If you're setting up in the morning are you getting busted by any birds roosted in sight?

if you are there early enough and have set your blind up enough times you should be able to set up right beneith them in the morning. Turkeys dont see to well in the dark

Guess I'd have to question that one. In my 10 yrs of hunting turks I've never been able to (nor really wanted to) set up right beneath them - gun or bow hunting. Maybe it's just me......

My question was in regard to his blind placement in relation to the proximity of the timber. Looks to me like there's enough distance between the blind and timber edge that would keep him from getting spotted while setting up. Looks like a perfect fly down set up to me.

it can be done...
i have done it myself on several occasions without spooking birds.

however, i have not killed one yet doing that....
close but no cigar

So are you saying it can or can't be done? Cause if you haven't killed a bird using that strategy I would suggest "not" doing it that way... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
