I had an interesting hunt two years ago that amazed me while in my favorite stand, a pine tree by a dryed up pond in a small finger of timber. I climbed in for the 1st time that season on November 9th. about 45 minutes before daybreak. About 20 minutes after settling in I could make out the shape of a deer approaching directly towards me from the dry pond. As it got closer I could tell it had a huge body but little more until he walked up to a 9" pine tree about 8 yards away. He started rubbing the tree & I could make out his main long beams raking up & down, he had to be 22" or better. All I could do is watch with excitement as he walked to another tree & rubbed again then walked away. Man what a rush! That's the last time I seen him.

After two days & seeing a parade of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year old buck I started to wonder if a mature buck would ever show up. The third morning I didn't feel well but pushed myself to give that stand one more try. I pearched myself in the same tree anticipating another active day. There was a chance of rain that morning & the skys were overcast. After seeing several young buck again early on things quieted down for a while.

Around 8:10 am I heard grunting coming my way. I stood up & hooked up my release in anticipation. It wasn't long I saw a mature doe trotting my way. She stopped in an opening in front of me at 15 yards & looked back. Thinking that it was probably one of the smaller buck I had been seeing I made a quick decission to take her since she offered a clean shot so I wasted no time drawing & placing a shaft in her boiler room. She busted straight away into the dry pond & dropped in her tracks after 20 yards.

That's when I looked back to see a great buck 25 yards away coming in on her trail. I quickly nocked another arrow & readied myself but he stopped behind some pine branches & stared at the doe he was after laying there dead for a couple of minutes. To my surprise he slowly walked right up to her & circled her while sniffing. He went the whole way around her stopping to bury his nostrils in her sweet spot! I expected him to run for the hills but he turned around & walked back towards me. Unknown to me there was another doe locked up in the pines afraid to come any closer & he went to her. I thought this is it, there out of here, but she just stood there less than 25 yards away as he went behind her & started licking her as she released her droppings.

After he did that he came a little closer & started rubbing his neck on the side of a 14" tree, took a couple more steps & stopped. I had one small opening to slide an arrow through, after thinking this is probably the only chance & he would turn around & go back to the other doe & disapear & quickly drew & really focussed on getting through that opening. When I felt I could do it I let one rip. The buck growned & lunged forward, trotted to the exact spot I shot the doe & spun around real quick then walked back to the other doe. I watched as they both walked slowly away to where I couldn't see then amymore, which was about 30 yards.

Now the mind starts second guessing & you try to figure out what the hell just happened. I stared & glassed in the dirrection they went but could not see them & did not see them leave the small patch of cover. About 10 minutes later another buck came through from the other direction. He saw the dead doe & slowly approached to within a couple yards & then high tailed it out of there. Another 15 minutes pass when another small buck comes in from the same direction the last one did & walks right under me. I put my binoculars on him & followed him to see if he would go to the other deer if they were still there. As I him with the glasses he walked right up to the other doe which I couldn't see crouched on the ground. He stood right over top of her & she bolted out of there with him in tow. No sign of the big one I shot at? Where did he go & how good did I hit him I thought, is he laying close by dead?

It has been only 30 minutes since I shot him but when I started to feel rain drops I was compelled to get down to look for sign. I walked over to pick up the shaft that zipped through the doe & slowly walked over to where the buck was standing when I shot. I spotted the shaft & as I reached to pull it out of the dirt I caught movement out of the corner of my eye.

There he was walking away slowly 50 yards away through a cut corn field with his tail tucked in. The fact that he didn't run was a good sign & the shaft beibg drenched in blood confirmed it was a leathal shot, probably liver. After he was out of sight I went to see where he was laying, not more than 35 yards from the stand. I had an idea where he would go to lay down again so I got the doe out & waited 4 hours.

When I returned to look for him I approached from the opposite direction slowly glassing the draw as I went. No visual of him, but as I crossed the draw & came across his trail which was not hard to see. I followed it to where he had bedded but he was no where to be seen. After a lot of eye buldging tracking I found only a few specks of blood on some high grass. Another 60 yards I found him piled up just ahead. I can't believe he lived that long with a punctured liver & one lung, amazing strength those mature buck have!

Filled both tags in 10 minutes, what a hunt. True story, hope it helps your bordom a little. Here he is.
